My PC doesnt recognize mp4 anymore!

Hey all,
You guys have been such a help in the past, here's a new problem:
I bought one of those mp4 players from eBay, the ones from china? they look alot like an ipod...
Anyway it worked fine for a while, then it sat in a drawer for a few months. I pulled it out one day to put songs on it for my wife, I plugged it into my pc via the included usb cord, and all of a sudden, my pc wont recognize the device anymore! argh! I tried using that quirky chinese drive disc, but no avail. I tried doing the windows install thing. but you get the virtual runaround.
What im asking is, is there a universal installer or something that can get my pc to recognize the device again?
