Hi

Since a week back, I've been having a tough time with my DVD Writer (hp dvd635i) as it fails to burn after the progress-bar completes the 100% mark. Sometimes the result is a blank DVD and sometimes the data is written (by looking at the DVD).

The error I get is a end of disk-at-once

...

7:53:23 PM #31 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1855
Burn process failed at 8x (11,080 KB/s)
...

From the DVDs that have data written (but failed) but show 0 bytes in My Computer - is there any way to read that data using another tool ? Something like norton's tool that reads sector-wise ?

Thanks

Anjanesh

Could you post the entire burn log as there may be more evidence as to why you are getting sporatic results?

Moser Bauer or what I suspect are TDK discs can be dodgy sometimes...not everyone has good luck with them, Verbatims seem to yeild a high success rate.

Your HP DVD writer isn't showing current firmware and I'm having a time finding any firmware for the drive in it's original state...it appears to be a rebadged Lite-On which may or may not have a current firmware available for it.

This means that your drive doesn't know how to handle your discs...a firmware update may fix this error.

good that you updated your firmware....... did it do the trick? did you try again? how did you do?

also noticed:
Quote:
Physical memory : 759MB (777660kB)
Free physical memory: 193MB (197884kB)
Memory in use : 74 %
you are using too much memory.... close down some programs that are running in the background, no internet, and no multi tasking while trying to burn! some members even shut down their antivirus software while burning!

Yes - same error after update. Sometimes data gets written to disk, sometimes it doesnt (blank disk even after 100% complete only after which it shows Failed).

Cannot perform end of disk-at-once

Btw, Nero was taking like 50% of the memory at the time of writing.
Normally 300MB free memory is always left.

Nero version: 6.3.1.26 (Nero Express)

your version of Nero 6 is not the stablest version.... 6.6.0.18 is the most stablest version of Nero 6 and I would update it to that version. Here's how:

Before udating to 6.6.0.18 I would save the serial #, uninstall Nero, then use the cleaning tools : http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html
then do a registry clean up(free registry cleaner, CClean: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?1) and defrag...... then reboot!

install package one:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_burning_rom/?539

then install package two:
http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Patch_for_NVE3.html
reboot and you're good to go!

Be sure to omit the InCD package when installing. Also, how old was that firmware when you reflashed the drive....I think this might just be a case of the media outgrowing support for the drive and might be time for a new one.

I looked up the firmware on the HP site and it's less than a year or so old! but just so you know.... not all firmware updates will solve MID codes! some might just solve a bug problem or update a write strategy for some MIDs and not the one you need! But it's always good to have the latest firmware update for your drive.

I just bought an external USB DVD Writer ( Sony DRX-S70U) and uninstalled Nero 6 OEM (which came with my HP DVD Writer) and installed Nero 7 OEM.

I tried writing once again using my HP DVD Writer and still same old story. So its definitely not a s/w problem.

The Sony DVD Writer works fine and have writter a couple of DVDs using the same DVDs that I bought earlier (so it cant be the DVDs), but since its USB based, I still wouldnt know if the firmware of the HP DVD Writer is the one with issues. Im now 99% sure that its a h/w issue.

anjanesh - just passing thru and saw your logfile post was way too big on the eyes, so i took the liberty of removing the 'code' statements out of the post.

One thing i noticed in the logfile is this -

Quote:
Connected to MMC as unknown drive with class-nr : 1
Drive is autodetected - recorder class: Std. MMC recorder
..meaning that version of Nero didn't recognise the burner correctly so it thought you had some unknown generic burner.

- see my first comment, i'm assuming Nero 7 only sees the HP burner as a generic burner also.

as i say, you'll find it's a Nero issue...

..post the latest logfile (from a burn using the HP burner) and see what the good folks can make of it...

Odd ... all this time (1.5 yrs) this is issue didnt arise. The Nero I was using to burn with the HP DVD Writer was the one that came with the Writer - Nero 6 OEM version. But I did burn a LOT of DVDs for my friends etc.

I uninstalled Nero 6 OEM and installed Nero 7 OEM only because of the Sony Writer I just got.

i'm just saying that Nero has been using the burner as a generic burner, sure it'll work most of the time, just thought i'd mention it as it's best to get everything setup correctly due to Nero's somewhat picky nature.
i'm guessing the HP burner just doesn't find those discs palatable.

i removed the 'code' statements again, 'fraid this laptop i'm using at the moment only supports 1024x768 maximum so the code statements make the logfile look like a huge billboard :)

Any setting worth mentioning ? I dont if it a memory issue, but prior to all this, my 256MB memory module (have an additional 512MB module and 1GB module) was giving some issues (BSOD).

I think the other guys have been over all the settings; trouble is with discs such as HP and TDK (and other such 'brands' too) is that they use various different manufacturer's discs, and even 2 identical looking packages from 'brands' such as these can have 2 completely different manufacturer's discs within; personally i would use those remaining HP discs on the Sony burner only and try something better on the HP burner.

/hints to look at media listed in my signature :)

Nero SmartStart > Extras > Get System Info

Does this mean that Nero is detecting it as a generic burner ?
