I'm going out to buy a new PC and some of them have lightscribe and other don't. Should I have LightScribe?
If so what is the best media to use with it and what software do you use for designs and such?
Also, is buying a PC with a LightScribe DVD burner the best route or should I buy and install my own BenQ LightScribe burner?

Some like it and some don't...I prefer printable media and a printer such as Epson capable of printing directly to the disc vs. a grey scale image.

Most people have the best luck with Verbatim...LS, Printable and regular +/- R.

The BenQ drives are no longer available..if you know where to get a DW1655 I'm sure many would like to know the source. Furthermore installing a drive on a new PC would likely void any warranty once you break the seal on the case.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are saying, but how would the warranty be voided if you install another burner? I don't see why you can't either add an additional burner or replace the original. I haven't ever done this on a new pc, but then again, I didn't discover burning until my pc was 5 years old. :(

When I bought my new Sony VAIO with a 1 year warranty it did have a seal located on the rear of the case. I was told if that seal was broken by someone other than a certified technician (BS) that the warranty would be null and void. While I had no problems with my ability to install a drive, I would have a problem if my HDD would take a dive two weeks later and when I try to make good on the warranty discover that Sony wouldn't honor it because the case had been opened and alterations had been made.
The same goes for my wife's BMW...if I were to install a new set of speakers and then something went wrong with the head stereo unit, then BMW wouldn't have honored the warranty work on the stereo.
All I'm saying is if it were me, I would wait out the warranty period until I started making modifications and just work with what I have for the time being. Sometimes it is worth it to wait.

I bought my Dell just about 2+yrs ago and there wasn't a seal on the case! I guess it's a new thing! I love my computer.... still going strong after 2+yrs and still running like new!

My VAIO is going on 4 years I think...maybe it's a thing of the past, but I wouldn't want to risk such a big investment over a $40 drive that could wait til later.

BTW...I couldn't wait, I went ahead and cracked open the case and installed my POS BTC rebadged I/O Magic drive and shortly there after once I had the bug I installed the NEC 3540a. I was just putting the warning out there.

I use Lightscribe and Inkjet printable media.
My opinion:
Here in USA,the Epson Stylus Photo R series prints directly onto inkjet printable media. I have the R-200 and use reg hub Ty Shiny inkjet and maxell/verbatim White full hub inkjet printable media.
Now there's full hub shiny inkjet and full hub white glossy media that should give phenomenal covers.
LS media is reg hub. This means less area is printed on them-being 20 mms or so from the center hole (hub). My best covers are full hub-which print right up to the edge of the center hole..
The light scribing process can also reduce the life of a burner.
You gotta watch out for some of those LS burners. There's some crappy ones-HP. A lot of them also don't booktype- TSST/HP. Find a Benq 1655/Lite-on,stick with quality plus format,and booktype them to dvd-rom. Some drives will have to have an extra enhancement utility to get a better image burned.
Also watch out for the LS media. Verbatim is some of the best.
Here's some of my covers. You'll notice the reg hubs from the full hubs:
1 huge bonus with some of the Epson Stylus Photo R series-,I get generic ink very cheap. Usually $12- $15 for all 6 carts. R-200/220/240/300/320/and R-340. A set of 6 from local stores like staples/walmart-then you're talking about $80 for a set of 6. The savings from ink more than makes up for the price of my printer.

Those Ty watershields and the full hub shiny's are my next batch of media.Very nice Ihoe. That LS cover looks inferior.
I'm still working off of the white,matte full hub verbs and reg hub shiny's.

the only thing I don't like about the watershield Taiyo Yudens are the fact that they are -Rs! Now if they were +Rs..... those are the ones that I would buy permanently! The glossy look is sooooooo nice! that picture doesn't even do justice to how it looks in your hand!

Lightscribe quality sucks.
I use it because it's better than hand writing on a disk with a Sharpie and I'm not going to buy an inkjet printer just to print DVD labels, and the Lightscribe disks don't cost that much more than plain disks.
