Does HDTV + Wii = Ugly Graphics?

Hi guys, I've been playing my Nintendo Wii on my 10-year old regular 32" tube TV via RCA cables and I thought that games like Zelda Twilight Princess looked amazing. However, I just recently bought an Olevia 32" HDTV and component cables for my Wii and it looks awful. To me it looks a lot blurrier and jagged (I have tried changing my HDTV's sharpness settings but that didn't help much) than on a regular TV.
One thing that is strange for me is whenever I turn on the Wii and set my HDTV to Component, I get horizontal lines across my entire screen. It only happens during in-game from what I can tell though... the Wii menu looks fine. If I switch my Wii to RCA and flip my HDTV's source to RCA the lines are gone (picture quality is even blurrier though). Then if I switch the cabling and HDTV back to component the lines are actually gone (but the quality still doesn't look very good.)
I have setup my Wii to display in Widescreen mode and in 480p. To me it almost looks so bad I want to just go hook it back up to my regular Sanyo tube TV. Is this normal or am I possibly doing something wrong?

Hmm well it seems I may have found the answer... I just didn't look around good enough. I had searched by threads on this forum but didn't find the answer. It turns out this problem was mentioned on the front page at one time and that the answer is to set the Wii to display in standard 480i. So I changed it to 480i and it looks MUCH better. Not sure why 480p isn't wanting to work right though. Very strange.
Oh well at least for now I don't have to be so disgusted!

so wait, dows that mean that there is no need to buy wii component cables? because 480i doesnt need them does it?

Well apparently from what I have read this problem only happens with some people. The article said they hoped that Nintendo would fix this in a firmware update. I'll probably email Nintendo and see if they can be of any help.

in my opinion it is your tv. i have a 27 inch olevia and it is garbage. before the one year warranty ran out it was replaced 4 times through olevia from various problems. and even now the 5th replacement i have from them doesnt work right all of the time.
but one thing i did notice is that when i have my ps2 hooked up through composite that it looks like complete ass. lots of ghosting and general blurring. my wii on the hitachi with components looks amazing tho.
i know the price tag on those olevias seem enticing but with my experience they are complete junk. if i were you i would take it back to the store and get my money back and buy a more reputable brand

Well I am very satisfied with my Olevia HDTV so far. Everything else looks great on it... and I just found on the Nintendo forums about a bagillion pages on this same problem except it's happening on a lot of "big name" HDTVs too. A lot of people seem to think it's a problem within the Wii itself. I hope it can be fixed somehow though cause 480i isn't really eye-popping--but at least it's playable.

I was playing Zelda on my LG 37" LCD HDTV in 50hz as 60hz makes the screen go blue and it didnt look to bad, then plugged my wii into my crappy old TV which ran at 60hz looked amazing i almost didnt want to play on my HDTV lol
Then i finally got my HD cables and playing in 480p and it pretty much like playing with the same GFX as the smaller TV
37" + 50hz = Ugly
28" + 60hz = Wicked
37" + 480p = Wicked ^_^
If all fails sit as far back as you can from the TV lol im sure it can only look better then closer up lol

Well I just moved the Wii back to my standard definition TV. To me it looks a lot better on it since I cannot get 480p to work right on some games. The strange thing is I just tested out a few other games (Wii Sports and Rayman) and they didn't give me those weird horizontal "scan" looking lines on 480p and they looked pretty good. Seems to be only the first two games I tried (Zelda and Excite Truck). So maybe I'll just beat those on standard def and then play the rest on my HDTV at 480p... very strange though that those games do that.

I have the Sony KDS R60 XBR1, and the wii looks pretty darn good. Cartoonish, but bright and clear!

A GOOD TV with a good cable will show a bad picture more acurate... so.. if you play a game with a low resolution it will show as more "blocky".. if you take it to a small TV with a blurrier image it will apear to be smoother. So.. that's that.

mine is blocky but only really with my mii's, which is to be expected. The rest might just be me, but i cant really see a difference maybe im just wanting the gfx to be amazing lol!

Odd, but when I go into settings, I try to set my TV to Hi Def 480p instead of 480i, and it wont let me make the change....

I think it may depend on the game you are playing. I have a 27'' olevia and zelda and wii sports looked like total crap. Call of duty 3 however looked great. I havnet tryed changing it back to 480i yet. I might bring the wii over to my buddies tomorrow to try on his 65'' mitsubishi dlp to see if its any better.

When the game developers start to create games rendiering with higher resolution it'll look better... so yes, it's very much up to the game itself how it will look using HD and big screen TVs. That probably explain why some people think it's crap and some don't. They have played different games.
I played Zelda TP before and after and I was not impressed by the result using the komponent cable on my 42" LG. It made the lines sharper and it look more like "lego".
I'm happy with Needs For Speed, Heatseeker and SSX Blur though.
