Hi, first a general thanks to this site as a whole. After searching through the forums I learned how to make a backup copy of Wii games (i.e. got the right drive, programs, etc.). Thanks!
Now a couple, well, dumb questions that weren't as easily found searching the forums.
(1) I'm in the U.S. (which I now understand is NTSC). I've reading a lot about problems potentially bricking Wii's but it usually seems to have something to do with an ISO and PAL. If I'm only backing up a Wii game I purchased in my local areas (instead of downloading an ISO) I shouldn't have any problems or be concerned if the game asks me to update my system, correct?
(2) I purchased the Wii used and it had a mod chip in it. It seems that the type of mod chip you have can be important. Can someone tell me why and/or how to find out what my system has?
(3) The Wii can still be connected to the internet correct? This probably sounds like a dumb question but I wasn't sure if Nintendo could do something similar to what Direct T.V. did/does when it sends kill packets to the units to cause the modified cards to fail and no longer provide all the channels?
(5) Could anyone provide a brief do/don't list for a person with a mod chip that will only make backup copies of discs purchased from their region?
(4) I'm off to look at the game cube forum now, but I'm hoping that making a backup of a game cube game (I want to get Mario Kart) is the same process as a Wii game? I thought the discs were smaller and didn't realize or know whether the LG drive would play them too.
Thanks for any help and sorry for the long first post. I know that searching for answers first is the correct thing to do (which is what I did to learn what to buy to backup games). But the above questions must of been to simply because I didn't see a lot of discussion about them.

1) Correct. The problem occurs when you haven't updated the Wii's firmware and newer games will automatically update it (probably for people without internet access). If you try to use these newer PAL games on a NTSC console it will try to do the PAL firmware update and that's the problem. If you make sure your Wii is updated you won't have this problem.
2) Open it up and look. If you can't do that, try out the Wiikey v1.2 disc (download from www.wiikey.cn). Others may be able to give better suggestions beyond that.
3) Yes. There have been problems with people losing their connection because they removed the battery without turning off WiiConnect24. Search around to find out how to fix that. Otherwise if you can connect you are good to go. Nobody knows for sure if Nintendo will be to able detect modchips yet.
4) Somebody else will have to provide that list.
5) I'm not sure about the process, but I do know you can put gamecube games on a regular sized DVD-/+R and it will work fine. Look around for more info.
Hope that helps,
Chris

Thanks a ton. That did help. I'll look more into the Gamecube backups, but it appears that it takes a completely different process and hardware than Wii backups.
Just one follow-up to your first answer. You mention to "make sure your Wii is updated you won't have this problem." Do I need to occassionally do this manually? It seems that it has initiated an updat on it's own a couple times already (I think it did ask me if I wanted to allow the update though).

The Gamecube games are done exactly as the Wii games. Follow the guide in the stickied section in the beginning of the forum and you should be good to go.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you referring to this thread which is in the Gamecube forum:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/61273
I doesn't sound remotely close to how I have succesfully backed-up my Wii games.
If you are referring to a different process or backup guide I'd be very appreciative if you could link to it.
Thanks!

what he means is that you can do the exact same thing you did to backup a wii game with gamecube games...
the guide you're referring to is when you're directly dumping the game from the gamecube itself...
You can do it from your computer if you already have the lg drive, which I think you have, cause otherwise.. how did you backup a wii game in the first place?
good luck

O.K., thanks. Yep, I have the LG drive and am thrilled about it!
That gamecube guide had me really confused. So basically the LG drive will read the Gamecube disk then? I've never actually seen a gamecube disk but I was under the impression that it was smaller than a regular DVD so I didn't realize the LG drive would play a smaller disk (assuming I'm correct that it is actually smaller).
Thus, am I correct in saying that it is as simply as sticking the Gamecube game in the LG and running the raw dump program and then Nero? Is so, sweet and thanks for the help.

That is correct, the lg drive will read wii disks as well as GameCube, and yes GameCube games are smaller disks, but no matter, all you have to do is place the disk right in the middle of the tray and the drive will pick it up.
Same process as the wii backup guide, and you can back them up onto small dvdr's or regular sized dvdr's as well, a neat idea too is that you can fit multiple GameCube games into 1 regular sized DVDR

How is this done? Do I just burn the image of one game to the DVD and leave it open to still be burned to later and then burn another game image to it? How does the game know which game to load?
Also, I just rented a gamecube game to play just realized (unless I'm missing something) that while the Wii will play the gamecube game, I actually NEED to own a gamecube remote and physically plug it into the week. The Wii remote and classic remote don't seem to work. Also, the gamecube game is asking me to insert a gamecube memory card.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but while the Wii will play a gamecube disk, to play the game you need an actual gamecube controller and memory card (yet more things to purchase).

actually, I guess a better process would be to dump several gamecube games and leave them on my harddrive and then burn them all at once to the DVD, right? I'm still confused how the Wii will know which game to play when the disc with multiple games on it is inserted.

Yes, you do need a GameCube controller to be able to play GameCube games, and a memory card if you decide to save your progress, as the wii internal memory can't be accessed through the GameCube control port (yet) think of the wii as 2 different systems (wii and GameCube)
As for being able to burn multiple GameCube games into a 4.7 DVDR check this guide here http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?p=473063 it will answer the rest of your questions

Thanks, you have been a ton of help. I'm off to take a look at the guide.
I'm assuming the cost of a controller and memory card is probably worth it in order try a few game cube games. I'll googled a top 10 gamecube games list to give me an idea of what may be good.
Are there any gamecube games in particular that you would suggest? Anything like MarioKart64 (but for gamecube), etc.?

If you want fun party games try:
Super monkey ball - all series, very fun with a few mates
Mario party - bit long but kinda fun
Fighting:
Super Smash Bros - all time fav, gona get SSB Brawl when that comes
Naruto - they have 1 and 2 in america but not sure about 3+4
Soul Calibur 2 - man link is so cool in this game
Shooting:
007 Nightfire - my fav one
Time Crisis - duno what one, but my mate had it and the multiplayer was fun especially the one when you die you become a zombie and you have to infect other players until only one survives.

If you're looking for a decent list of Gamecube games try here, IGN's Top 25:

To the above poster, I think you are refering to TimeSplitters 2 and not Time Crisis. It has that mode you're talking about. I loved that game.
