is it a good thing to have ur ports opened while downloading?? or is easier to be hacked and stuff like that???!

u have to open a port for an application to get through to net. its only open when that app is running tho
ie msn will always be using it as its listening for connections

Here is a good forum to learn how to open a port/firewall and how to set up port forwarding. It will help allot with speeding up your downloads. It has allot of guides for specific routers as well. so if your router is listed it will give you a step by step guide on how to do this stuff with your router.
