iRiver DVD to MP4 conversion

Hope someone can assist. A mate of mine just bought his son a iRiver player. He wants to put DVD movies on it but is not sure how. From what I can gather you probably need DVD Decyptor and then another program to convert the decypted DVD into MP4 so that is can then be loaded onto the iRiver?

If someone can point me in the right direction, it would be appreciated.
