Does anybody know if I turn my LG-8164b to a external will it still work the same.

yes, but keep in mind that not all external enclosures will work correctly with your dvd-rom model. I have the same model as yours and I am using the AcomData 2195 5.25 drive external enclosure. Both USB 2.0 and Firewire works great.

It worked on mines but can't guarantee that it will work on yours. But most likely it should.
