Hi, I have a _NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A DVD burner and it has completely stopped working. It will not recognize CDs, DVDs, CDRs, or DVDRs. Explorer asks that I insert a disc after the drive stops trying to read the disc. I have already upgraded the firmware to the latest version and I have just finished checking the IDE and power connections. I have also uninstalled/reinstalled the device from the device manager. I find this problem rather annoying, as my hard drive is getting full with things that would be better off on a DVD. To top off the problem, my other DVD drive (not a burner) refuses to read any burned media. I have experienced this with many computers, although never to the point where no discs would work at all. Does anyone have any suggestions?

DVD drives/burners are hardware devices and are not programmed to give two weeks notice before they quit.

Would suggest that you may have a problem with the amount of free space on your computer or virus/spyware problems.

A little more information would be useful.

What kind of information are you looking for? I have several GB of free space and a fully updated version of PC-Cillin. Also, the thread topic was just an attempt to make an interesting title. I know the drive won't warn me that it won't work anymore. Please help me find a solution to this problem. Thanks.

Suspect your problem is associated with insufficent hard drive space on your computer. A minimum of 8 to 10 GB of free space is recommended in order to allow for temporary files and system processes.

Down and dirty method, try cleaning the lens, either a lens cleaner or a can of compressed air. If that doesn't work, try PORN. seems to perk my drive up quite a bit.
