Hi All,
I am new to this and want to back up some DVD's that I have.
PLease clarify do you need to rip the dvd first with DVDFabdecrypter or dvddecrypter, and then shrink it with DVD Shrink, and then burn the ISO file with Nero? not sure how all this works. I looked through the threads and just trying to put it all together.
I realize there are programs to purchase that do everything, but trying to stay the freeware course.
Thanks
Bobby

Check out this link:
http://webpages.charter.net/bacitup/Guides.htm
It has guides for the most popular DVD copying programs. They are
very complete and walk you through step by step.
Also available on the site isa large number of downloads.
On my computer I have RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter (some prefer DVD
Fab Decrypter because it is still updated), FixVTS, Shrink, Imgburn,
and Nero. All of those are free except Nero.
I also have AnyDVD which is a purchased program. It is well worth
the cost. It is the best decryption program. Once you purchase it
you get free updates for life. They update everytime a new protection
comes out.
All of these will run on the same machine with no conflict. This
combinations give you many options. I have not found the movie these
would not back up.

Can you clarify, I need to decoded movie first, then shrink it?
Meaning DVD Shrink will not decode and shrink, correct?
Also, I am trying to burn a movie know, and it says it will take 1 HR and 30 minutes, does this sound correct?
Is there a faster way? My compter is descent 2 Gig athlon processor with a 1gig of memory. Thanks for your help
Bobby

A bit of history....
Once upon a time DVD Shrink could be used to rip (remove the CSS encryption found on commercial DVDs) all DVDs.
Once they were ripped, Shrink could then compress them to fit on a single layer blank DVD (A DVD-5).
They could now be easily burned with almost any DVD burning program.
Well a few years ago the developer of DVD Shrink quit working on the program and went to work for Nero, he helped develop and refine Nero Recode 2. This left Shrink an orphan.
Now along comes Sony and Macrovision with new forms of encryption, like Arccos and Ripguard. Poor Shrink couldn't rip these bad boys.
But Shrink is a great little compressing program so all that has to happen is a more potent ripping program needs to go to work on that nasty Arccos or Ripguard protection first.
Thats where a program like DVDFabDecrypter (Now DVDFabDecrypter HD or something like that) comes into action. It processes the DVD before Shrink which leaves you with a nice set of decrypted files on your HDD.
You can now open these files with Shrink, or if you created an ISO you can open that with Shrink. (Either way works.)
Shrink can compress the files to fit your blank single layer DVD.
The last few versions of Shrink come with a neat feature you will see when you get towards the end of the process. It lets you set a DVD drive as a "Target" and to burn with Nero, or DVD Decrypter, or ImgBurn, or CopyToDVD.
If you have any of these programs you can "aim" Shrink at them and Shrink will open them, starting and completing the burn process. If you want to work in ISOs, use DVD Decrypter(Yes, it's a burning program as well as a decrypting proggy) or ImgBurn, if using files, use Nero or CopyToDVD.
You mentioned ISO so that's a good way to go. Like I mentioned though, either way will work and the end result will be a copy of your DVD.
Oh yes, If a DVD does not have the newer encryptions, you can skip the first step (DVDFab Decrypter) and let Shrink do the ripping...Save yourself some time.
About your burn time... Be specific here. Is that the amount of time for the actual burning or is that including the ripping time as well? For just the burn, that would be way too long. For the rip and the burn it would be slow but reasonable... Depending on what media you are using, the drives you are using, DMA enabled or not and other issues.
See if you can complete a burn and when you do, try and post a Nero burn log we can look at.
With the correct programs, settings, drives and media, a healthy computer can copy a typical DVD from start to finish in 30 minutes or less.

Thanks for all your help, you answered a lot of my questions.
I ripped the movie then used shrink to compress and burn it using Nero, it took 1hr 30 minutes for the actual burn. Not sure where to get the Nero logs from. One additional thing, the movie picture looks perfect, except the movie isa little bit zoomed in cutting of the edges.

Hi bgyako,
What version of Nero are you using?
You can get your Nero log a couple of ways. The easiest way is to click on "Details" after the burn is done. Save the log to your desktop. Then you can copy/paste it into a reply.
Nero saves logs automatically though so you should have one.
Try looking here:
C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.log
If nothing is there, try here:
C:\Documents and Settings\"your username"\Application Data\Ahead\Nero Burning ROM\NeroHistory.log
You can also do a search for NeroHistory.log
Are you by any chance using an external usb burner? Those can be slow.
If you do post a log, post just one complete log. There may be a bunch of them stored, we just need the last one. Look at the date/time on it to tell where it ends and the next one begins.

Fasfrank gave you some excellent advice. Sounds like you are making
progress.
I just wanted to mention that if you purchase AnyDVD it runs in the
background with Shrink. It makes it possible to do a lot of movies
Shrink will not do alone.
The free programs will do about the same thing but usually takes a
little longer.
That burn time sounds awfully long. When I do a movie with AnyDVD,
Shrink and Imgburn, it takes approximately 13 min to write the ISO
file and 14 min. to burn with Imgburn. I am burning at 4 times
speed.

Hi Nero 6.0 express. Here are the logs, I am going to try again tonight. I think the difference is, last night I instructed shrink to compress and write directly to DVD. I am going to try creating ISO first then using decrypter to burn the ISO to DVD and see if thats faster. Also not sure if it makes a difference but it was cartoon I was copying not a regular movie.
Again thank you to all with advise...

Bobby,
You posted two Nero logs but no problem. I'm looking at the last log, it's dated 1/6/07 which was the 1st of June so thats gotta be the last one. Not a bad looking log overall.
I'll comment about a few things:
Quote: Nero API version: 6.0.0.0
Using interface version: 6.3.1.4
Should update your Nero. The best version of Nero 6 is 6.6.0.18.
You can get them at filehippo or download both packages from my website here:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/Guides/Software.html
Quote: Recorder: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A> Version: 2.04 - HA 0 TA 0 - 6.0.0.0
Your burners firmware is quite out of date. New firmware (Version 2.06) here:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1837
Quote: Disc Manufacturer: TTG01 -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
Good media. Looks like TDK. Here is the media guide I use:

We recommend burning at 1/2 the rated speed of the media. I wouldn't worry to much about this but keep it in mind. I burn fast too.
Please note the time the burn started, 11:06:03.

How long are your actual burns taking? Looks fast to me!
Get the ripping portion of the process tuned up and you will doing great. Like I mentioned, this is not a bad log. I'd like to see firmware upgraded but no rush on that because your media is burning properly. Same with the upgrade to a newer version of Nero. What you have is working so I'd leave it alone. Especially if Shrink is recognizing it and opening it for you.
Ditto Shardels comments about AnyDVD. It's a great program from a great company, Slysoft. Be sure to take a look at it and try the 21 day free trial.

Thanks for all the info. You hit everything on e the head down to the media. I as mentioned before I ripped the security and then let shrink do everything to the media, I should have created the ISO but wanted to try directly. Once I started the with shrink it took 1hr 30 min. That includes compressing and burning, I guess. I am going to try the ISO method, will let you know the outcome tomorrow.
I will definetly upgrade my burner firmware, it's been about 2yrs since last updated. Thanks to all...

One more thing... Do you have room in your PC for a DVD-ROM drive? You are ripping with a burner which can be very slow.Quote:

CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD800JD-32HKA0 13.0 viasraid Port 2 ID 0 DMA: ?
Also it looks like you have a 80 Gb SATA hard disc drive. Make sure you have plenty of room. Do a disc clean up and a defrag.
What CPU does your PC have? Have you blown the dust out of it's cooling fan/heatsink lately?

Hi All,
CPU 2600 AMD athlon. Correct on 80Gig HD.
I retried using DVDfab HD decrypter to rip , took 3minutes.
used shrink for the ISO file 4 minutes, and burned with DVD Decrypter instead of shrink pointing to Nero 20minutes..
Looks like that worked perfectly. I got the new firmware for my DVD burner from NEC, just need to load it. Good point about using a regular DVD player not to over use the burner, will pick one up from work.... Thanks to all I am well on my way to being a movie burning guru....LOL....Next phase conquer the dual layer DVD...
