I've got a problem with some blank Verbatim I just bought. I've gone through two one hundred cakes of Verbatim in the past eighteen months and all but a couple have been good copies and they were Taiwan 1x-8x . I just bought another batch from Newegg- Verbatim ,Taiwan , up to 16x .
and they copy just fine except these won't work on my computer nor my stand alone player, only on the recorder used to record. Computer DVD player say It's a blank disk when I can watch it on the recorder. I also have some TDK x16's and they act the same as the Verbatim x16's,so I have to assume it's something to do with x16.because the ones that always work on everything are x8.
So my Question is , why won't the x16 play on my computer or DVD-player? Have I wasted my money? Forgot to mention blanks are +r.
My stand alone recorder is Artec DR-RE12A and the dvd stand alone DVD-player is a Philips 642 which up to this point have played anything I put in It. "Disks that Is not like peanut butter sandwich".
After I wrote this letter for some help I did an experiment by recording with an +rw with stand alone recorder and than put it through DVD Decrypter and shrink and than copied to one of the up to x16's\r set recording speed 4x and it come out so I can play it on all equipment now, so I guess I can use the x16's just have to record with rw first. I still would like to know why I can't record with the x16 and play with all equipment like the x8's. Thanks for any help.
If this has been discussed before I couldn't find it. I put Verbatim blank in drive and run dvd Identifier, results below.

The symptoms you are describing sound as though the discs are not being finalized. Lack of finalization will allow recorded discs to be played on the original recorder that remembers the discs but not on any other recorder or player because the disc lacks the leadout information the finalization records. The switch from 8X to 16X or from +RW back to +R may inadvertently change the finalization setting on the recording software. I'd check that first.
Another possibility is that your drive does not record at 16X well enough to avoid serious errors, although that would not account for the computer DVD drive's claiming the discs are blank unless the lead-in was so bad it drive was "confused." It still sounds as though you need to check your finalization setting for 16X media.
Thank you for your reply. I come to a conclusion that It has to be the Artec-recorder,and after reading your reply I tried to find some support for this recorder and just as when I first bought it it doesn't have "any" In fact I think Artec has discontinued making stand alone recorders,If they did maybe a firmware upgrade would fix It. I bought this model because at the time most cheap recorders were about three to four hundred which I couldn't afford.
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdrecorders/artec-dr-re12a/846 Before I purchased this I looked here at the reviews which are almost all bad,but for the eighty dollars didn't have much to loose and it has played and recorded flawlessly, till now with the x16's, and I never could get the timed recording to work right, but that isn't so important to me. I don't think it has a setting for speed or at least I can't find it on the machine nor the manual which like everybody says it's a joke. It does have picture mode and the manual doesn't explain which should be used.
Picture mode list auto, film, video, smart, and super smart. I know that video will allow you to record -r's. I have always used super smart.
I guess I will copy with rw's and transfer to computer, than to r's that way I won't be wasting a hundred and fifty blanks. My thinking now is I will probably in the near future be buying a new recorder since they are going to 16's not the x8's.
I understand now: you are recording 16X media on the Artec, and the discs will play back on the Artec but not on anything else. That still sounds as though Artec is trying to finalize the discs but cannot since it does not support 16X, only 2.4X, 4X, and 8X DVD+R that it records at 1X.
Getting a new recorder sounds like a good idea. The recordings on the Artec may not be the best quality if it is trying to write at 1X on media designed for faster speeds. Sooner or later the discs may not be able to be played back on the Artec.
I have an Artec CD burner and you just cannot find update support for it. The company might be gone or just not into support for their products? Anyway, it works fine on CDs for me; have other more modern drives for DVD work.
The prices on new DVD drives are fairly reasonable. JoeRyan is correct, do yourself a favor and get a more uptodate burner.
I've been shopping on the net today, but again the only thing I can afford are the cheapies.
I noted that some made it a point that they can use the x16's so that must mean that you're right.I guess in order to use the hundred and fifty x16's I will record with rw than computer to r's.
I never thought 8 or 16 would make a difference, thought the machine would pick the speed
Have 16's been around long? maybe a bit of a numb question but I'm new at this game.
16X media have been around about two years. Now there is a push to provide 18X and 20X media with new MID codes. If these discs replace the present 16X discs, the compatibility problem starts all over again--they won't work unless there is a firmware update, and there is no firmware update because that's "too expensive" to manage.
Stock up on 4X DVD+RW. The new 8X DVD+RW media are being introduced now, and some retailers are replacing 4X with 8X, not realizing that 8X rewritable discs CANNOT WORK AT 1X! That means that no one can use 8X DVD+/-RW in a video recorder, a common use for time-shifting. Retailers are unhappy about all the varieties of discs on their shelves, and they are trying to cut down on the number of versions. (DVD+R 8X/16X/20X with or without LightScribe or ink-jet printable surfaces; DVD-R the same; DVD+/-RW 4X and 8X with or without CPRM; 8cm versions of everything; QFlix versions of everything--and then all the blue laser nonsense. Too much!
