Can I copy a burned Wii game?

Hi, I remember from the stickied thread, in order to copy a Wii game to your hard drive, you need a specific LG drive. However, if I have a game that was burned, can I just use any normal DVD burning drive? Also, as long as I update my WiiKey to the latest firmware in my region, I can play any games from any regions as long as that firmware isn't newer than mine right? How do I know what firmware update a game has? Thanks in advance.
