Question for Better explanation of firmware upgrading

I have been reading through the the threads and I'm a little confused about the firm ware upgrading. Now the common problem is and correct me if I'm wrong but using a PAL backup of strikers & SPM on a USA WII is causing WII setting brick is that correct? Now this is because a person has not updated their WII prior to running the striker or SPM game is that correct? Are there two different types of firm ware upgrades; 1 being the actual wii and the other being the modchip's Now I obviously know how to upgrade the modchips' firmware is this what need to ensure is up to date or is it the wii's firmware which i don't know how to do
any help in better understanding this would greatly be appreciated

Quick breakdown of firmware situation:

1) SPM bricks PAL Wii consoles if they do not have the latest firmware (2.2E)
2) Mario Strikers Charged bircks just the wii settings interface on an NTSC-U Wii if it does not have the latest firmware (2.2U)
3) This firmware that is being upgraded in this case is the Wii console itself. Not the chip
4) The Updates are available online via Nintendo WiFi and are included on newer games to ensure people without the internet get the upgrades. Installing out-of-region firmware updates without getting the latest firmware for your own region causes these problems.

PLEASE. Read and review. If need be, this might be something that could be sticky and closed so n00bs can clarify their situation.
