ok, i have a wiikey and i installed it. i can play back ups well but the problem is that my wii has to be turned off when i insert the backup in order to play correctly. if by some chance i want to just swap to another game, it will not read it. i have to then turn it off and power it back on. it will then read it because i had started the console up with the back up inside. is this normal?

You may have better luck with high quality DVD-R media, burnt at 4x, with a program called Imgburn. All sorts of weird issues have appeared largely due to bad/low quality media. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are often mentioned, personally I use Sony Accucore discs and had never had problems since. Also make sure it is DVD-R not DVD+R or RW
Do you think it will stress the laser if i keep using tdks? i just dont want to reburn all of those wii games again so i can keep playing these in the future. i just placed an order for virbatims, they seem to work really well for my xbox360.

TDK is great media that guy well doesnt know shit... but +r's will not work for my wii i have tried 3 different brands including verbat... but it really seems to depend on your wii
I have had no problems with hp 16x -r, verbat 16 -r, or tdk -r ... tdk seems to work the best lol no they all work perfect
its prob your chip like someone above said... clones are just a bit more crappy thats all... i had one and it really sucked... check for pics of clones and legit and see if you have a clone also use -r NOT +R
also i have read CloneDVD is a great burner program to use ... though imgburn is free and i really like it. But i use Nero too with no problems
