Just a basic question:
If I have a US wii and all I use is backups of US based wii games is there a risk of "bricking" my wii?
Is the problem of bricking coming from from copies/backups/doneloads of non US games onto US consoles?
Thanks in advance

as long as u are sure the backups you are using are "true" us games and not a release that has been doctored from PAL to NTSC as this may include an incorrect region update
safest option is to update your wii before u try a new game in your wii drive

@Larryje
I understand your frustrations now!!!
The frustration has nothing to do with not searching it has to do with dozens of contradictions in that thread, that is why I asked about a specific scenario.
The reason why basic questions get asked is that the threads become useless for basic questions.
the wii in question isn't on a network also so that method of regular update confirmation is out for me.

@S2K
There are plenty of other threads that answer your question. As well as the above thread that juice381 had provided.
Here are a few links that I have found by using the keyword BRICK and choosing only the Wii forum to search in.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/512611
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/516570
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/494171
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/8/459502
Those threads clearly answer your question.
As to the link that juice381 provided.
Are you blind?
you asked...

The link provided above by juice381 gives this information...
Nealio clearly said...
Quote: It doesn't matter as long as you download it via the Wifi connection... you can do it via the game updates--just MAKE SURE you have the correct region game for your console or like feod said, you'll brick your Wii!
I clearly said in the above thread that juice381 provided...
Quote: If you do not want to take a chance of bricking your Wii only play Region Game Disc that is the same Region as your Wii.
and
Quote: 100% safe way is to play same Region Disc as your Wii Region.
So where are these contradictions coming from?
As to the second part of your question...
Quote: Is the problem of bricking coming from from copies/backups/doneloads of non US games onto US consoles?
The thread above that juice381 provided answers that question as well...
Quote: The problem that is occurring is Wii owners that do not keep their Wii updated are bricking their Wii's due to installing the wrong region firmware on the Wii. This can be avoided by keeping your Wii updated to the latest released firmware.
Also the above post's that I provided above clearly gives you the answers of both questions as well. Which was simple to find by doing a search of the word BRICK and narrowing your search down to the Wii section.
And to think I let this thread well enough alone. Wasn't planing on posting to it until I saw the...

I due want to reiterate what Thinone stated above.
If you download your backups make sure they are true NTSC(U) Game Disc. There was a Mario Strikers VORTEX NTSC(U) Game disc released the other day on torrent sites which got labeled as NTSC(U) and said it was riped from an NTSC(U) Game Disc.
The game disc was actually a PAL Mario Strikers patched to NTSC(U) and still had the PAL firmware update on it. This caused some users to brick their NTSC(U) Wii. The thing is this could have been prevented by following one of the steps below...
1) Use backups you have dumped personally.
Or
2) If you download your NTSC(U) game disc then I would suggest keeping your Wii updated to the newest firmware plus for extra protection download Wii Brick Blocker to disable the update that is contained on the disc. This isn't mandatory but a good precaution to protect your Wii from being bricked by a mislabeled region game disc.

That is silly. I have been around tech boards for a very long time and certainly have a very good level of expertise on quite a number of technical subjects.
Usually the people answering the questions the way you did know something about the technical issues -- but nothing at all about basic tech writing.
The treads contain massive amounts of extraneous information, and the threads you point to (quite ironically) also include insistence the person do a search on prior threads (lol!).
Doing a search for "Brick" on afterdawn results in lots of old meaningless information, lots of incorrect and inconsistent answers.

How about if a definitive guide on "how to avoid bricking your Wii" gets posted, then stickied? I can see both sides, some of the posts have the info that you need, but they get watered down with a lot of 3rd hand info that is irrelavant that can confuse people, especially newbies (like me). I agree with Larryje, it does get old to see the same questions over and over, but I can also see S2Ks point, some threads do get lengthy.

Do you really think a sticky thread on a brick issue will stop members from asking the question anyway?
There are sticky threads for Modchips and How to backup a Wii game but that doesn't stop members from starting a new thread on that subject time and time again.

I will agree there are allot of meaningless post out there on BRICKING issues thats because the damn question is asked on a daily basis.

That is why there is a date stamp on the post that are submitted. Look at them. If the post seems outdated then look for 1 that is a month or so old.
Quote: lots of incorrect and inconsistent answers.
You will get this on every forum to an extent but it still doesn't mean you can't do a search and find out what the most consistent answer that is given on the subject.

Yes. that is what stickies are for. I have been around tech boards since the first bbs and 300 baud modems 25 years ago. (my first modem was actually 50 baud).
To just say "search for it" when there are plenty of threads that are overloaded with conflicting information, unclear information comes of as what we used to call a "hazing nonresponse."
Bricking is a serious issue.
A stickie wiht:
1) Causes
2) Prevention
3) partial bricking and recourse

Thats about the only thing I do agree with you on.
I still would like to see all this conflicting information that you are saying is out there on this subject.

Yes. that is what stickies are for.
It might be what they are for but my point is people don't seem to use the stickied information as much as they should. There are allot of sticked threads in every topic of this forum and I would say only 50% to 60% of the members even read them.
Quote: A stickie wiht:

3) partial bricking and recourse
On 3 of the links that I provided above all the above information is there that you say should be in a sticky thread. (Except for the partial brick and recourse due to this only being figured out last week.) If the Information is out there why should it matter if it is sticked or not? Members should search for the information and stop being lazy and expect everything to be spoon feed to them.
As of now I created a guide and had it stickied. But I bet there still will be allot of threads started on this same subject. Now days people are to lazy to look for the answer.
As to my Search for the answer reply. As you put it ("hazing nonresponse")
I will still tell members to search if the question has been asked and answered over and over again. The very first rule of this forum and most other forum is...
1. Before starting a new thread, use SEARCH first (located on top of the page..) to see if your question has been answered before!
If you don't like my (Search for your answer) reply then message the site owner or a Moderator and complain to them about it.
Till then I will keep hazing the members that don't use the search feature.
