I recently ordered a wiikey and I was wondering if I can test the chip with the wii open in case I do a bad soldering? will it harm it in any way?

I think you would need the front cover/cable at least connected so you have working power and reset buttons.

But you shouldn't need to completly add all screws etc. etc.
