I was wondering if someone could tell me why I can't seem to burn dvds anymore, I'm using Phillips DVD-R, and I've used them successfully recently so I dont believe it's the disc. But the last 3 times Ive tried to burn with Nero, they have all appeared with the same 'focus or tracking error' - normally after burning 10-20%. I searched and saw people with similar problems, but the answers seemed specific to that one person so I would be really greatful if someone could help me out. This is the log -

This is a message is a hardware error. It can be caused by the following:
Poor media - Try more than one brand of CD-R media to rule this out as cause.
Poor power - The power to your recorder could be fluctuating. If you have an internal recorder, try a different power connector and make sure it's not being shared by any other devices. If you have an external recorder, if possible, remove it from the external chassis and connect it to your system as an internal recorder. If this resolves your issue, you need to replace or repair the power source in your external chassis.
Optical head is dirty, needs alignment, or recorders circuit board has an open coil - please contact your recorder manufacturer to service your unit.
Try cleaning the lens of your DVDRW drive you can pick up a lens cleaner pretty cheap at the local WalMart, Radio Shack or the like.

This is a work around...
I have been having this problem with several DVD burners. Its actually a coding problem in Windows with USB. I'm not going to go into detail but its not media, but deferent media can trick the code for a temp fix but it will be back.
This is what I do and it works EVERY time. Long and short of it...
1-Go to Ubuntu.org and download Ubuntu and try to burn the ISO or order a CD.
in WINDOWS
2-Use whatever software to copy/make files..movie,mp3,file, ect.
3 - put them in a file on your c:/ drive.
4-turn your computer off.
5-make sure the Bios is set to boot from cd-rom
6-insert ubunto disk.
in UBUNTU
7-when its all loaded at the top put the curser over Places and choose cd/dvd create.
8-find the c:/drive and drag and drop the files and click write disk.
The disk will write and thats it.
Don't worry Ubuntu wont install, your just using the Live cd. once you shut down and reboot Windows will be back with all its crappy glory.
