Hey all, a lifesaver finding this page! I'm new to the Wii and wanted to look around for a backup option, there are some great guides that I've read on here. My problem is, I don't know how to solder. Is there any way to install a mod chip with no knowledge on the subject? I'm fine with software and can figure that out no problem, but the hardware is where I have a problem. Any suggestions?

Also, I've read a few debates as to which is the best mod chip...any settlement on the issue? So glad to have found the site!

you will need to pay a professional to soldier the chip for you. You can google for them, there are alot of them.

Hey thanks! I didn't even think about shipping it out and having it shipped back to me. I found a site that will install the WiiKey for $80. Now I just have to find a desktop computer so I can install the LG-8164b. Anybody know if there is an external version that can work with my laptop?

I'm excited, in a week or two I should be able to have enough set aside to get this puppy sent out for a little while!

I think that is the best way to go. I had never soldered anything and did my own, but it was nerve racking. It did work but it wasn't easy, at least for me. And by the time I add in the soldering iron and all the materials, it doesn't cost much more to have a pro do it.

My only concern is, if this chip becomes outdated will it mess up my Wii? Also, what is the implication of online play?

you could use any burner to burn games but to read wii games you need
the LG GDR-8164BB or BK which you could buy here :

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16827136088

You could use an external 5.25 case for the drive and connect it to your laptop via USB. you can get one here:
