Okay just a few months back i got a stick of ddr2 4200 1gb and i decided to stick in my mobo for better performance and smoke came out when i turned it on and i didnt post. And then i replaced it with the old ddr pc3200 256mb ram and i didnt want to boot. So tell is my mobo dead or what

How did you fit DDR2 memory into a DDR1 board? The number of pins is different!
Either way i'm afraid your board's past it.

unless your board has both ddr & ddr2 slots then when you put the ddr2 ram into the ddr slot, you fried the board & maybe the cpu too.

visual deformations, dark patches/burn marks/warped sections, or if the CPU smells funny (be careful not to confuse this with the smell of burnt silicon from your RAM slots, that will definitely smell if you saw smoke)

if cpu is plugged into new board then if acting eratic or not stable might indicate damaged cpu or not posting at all.
