Apologies in advance for the uber noob questions.

I have just installed a Nvid 8800gts on windows xp pro. I would like to know if it is possible to install Directx 10 on xp pro and if so will games that run on earlier versions of Directx (eg 'Dx 9') play on my pc if Dx 10 is installed.

Thanks for all help in advance and again sorry for the noobism.

Correct, needs Vista.

Not many people like Vista yet, too buggy and full of DRM restrictions.
But if you HAVE to buy Vista, partition your drive to dual boot and dont get rid of XPpro. Also, dont buy the basic version of Vista cause it has features blocked that other versions dont.

Ok, thanks alot. Just wondering though if partitioning my drive will make it slower as things may get very fragmented on it with two Os's running on it. If not I may well do it. Also would it be possible for me to 're-merge' the partioins if I ever wanted to get rid of vista without formating the hold hard drive again.

A partition doesnt make your hard drive slower, and if you dont like it, you can delete the partition and all your space will show back up on the original partition.
