Someone please answer wiikey solder help required!

I am about to install my wiikey basically now and tested the iron on a pice of crap old ps2 to comp device but the iron did not heat up? I never used a soldering iron before but am confident I know how after looking at stuff on the internet and all. How long does it take for a dual heat solderong iron to heat up. I also want to know if it is safe to put double sided electric tape under the chip since I am doing wire install. I as well want to know if I need to use solder or not when doing this when tinning the points. I am sorry to ask so much but I only have one wii and I worked my ass off to get it since I got it around christmas time and don't want to mess it up. I should have the old board since it is the first model distributed. Please offer some advice nad answer my questions thank you.

My advice since your Wii is precious to you and it took you a while to save up for it is to send it off and have a professional install the chip.

There have been allot of members that have this attitude and think it doesn't look that hard. Till they open it up and try to install it themselves and end up bricking the unit.

So I highly highly highly recommend you having a professional install the chip.

I appreciate your advice but I can't find anybody to do it for me. I can't spend alot on it either. I already spent money on the iron and stuff I am broke plus my xbox live just expired last and I want to renew so yea I want to try it myself kinda. I understand what you mean but still could answer my questions or maybe recommend someone. Hopefully cheap.

Teammodders also provides installation of Modchips as well so look on the main page for this information. (I highly recommend you have them or some other professional service install the chip)

Needed supplies:

Philips Screwdrivers
Tri Wing Screwdriver
Solder
15 Watt Soldering Iron
Wire Stripper
AWG 30 wire (suggested)
Desolder Braid (optional)
Pliers (optional)

Teammodders uses double sided tape to keep the Wiikey down on the Wii board. I would suggest placing it into a little slot to the right of where the Wiikey soldering points are made. Look at the image below...

You should tin all soldering points both on the Wii drive board and Wiikey plus tin both ends of each wire you use. (tinning is adding a small amount of solder to each soldering point)

This will make it easier to make your soldering joints without adding more solder at the time of making the joint.

Before modding the Wii make sure you go into the Wii settings and turn off Wiiconnect24. After the install you can then turn it back on.

Thank you very much I just practiced tinning on an old ps2 to comp device and found it work very well with no splashes from what I can see. I have followed team modders instructions before anyway and took pictures of their steps on my phone. I am going to test my luck and do it at 6:00 tonight. Thank you again I have a dual solder iron set to 15 watt. I bought all the necessary supplies (like I said I am broke now). Thanks for the wiiconnect tip I figured it would be bad to leave it on. I'll turn it off now anything else you can think of? thanks again.

Make sure the unit is unplugged and totally powered down when attempting this. A obvious thing to do I know but some people have done it :P And soldering with the power on is a no-no.

Well those are retared duh power on when solder duh. Of course the power is off I am about solder now just finished taking it apart but I can't disconnect the brown tape any help.

i don't think you watched/read all the guides well.

there is a white flap, you must CAREFULLY lift it. that will release the brown trace ribbon.

I have to say that I too was a rank novice at soldering. I followed the guides mentioned above for a wire install and it was a breeze. It's a mystery to me how this procedure could be screwed up. How exactly can you get the circuit board pads to disintegrate, short of using an arc welder as a soldering iron? That seems incredible to me.

I do not see it do you think it's ok if I just put double sided tape on the bottom of the chip and put it above the points like teammodders. ELectric tape of course. Cuase I don't want to break the brown tape but It's in the way of the place you suggested to solder with wires. teammodders picture link

i prefer where larrylje has been recommending to you. i have done it myself and it fits quite snugg and has a good amount of clearance from everything.

try looking at this install guide:

look at the connection of the ribbon to the board, there should be a white part of it that has a tiny hinge on each side. you have to flip it up carefully, then the ribbon will come free.

EDIT: I'm sorry it could be brown (i kinda forget). I believe you can see it in this install pics...it's on the right of most of the photos:

You can place it where teammodders have placed it but I have seen some have problems placing it there after reassembly of the Wii. It is a tight fit and can put pressure on the drive itself and cause the drive to bind up when trying to play a game.

I don't know why you can't get the Cable ribbon to disconnect all you do is flip up the lever to disconnect it.

Even if you can't disconnect the Ribbon Cable you still should be able to get the Wiikey to slide in the place that I suggested.

I did it I used a small flat tip screw driver and it came right up. Soldering time. I however can't seem to cut the wire very well has anyone been successful with a quick solder install?

it's been done successfully before. wire is just usually the more sound way to do it. that being said, if you're having trouble handling the 30AWG...again, you may want to look into some help. good luck.

It's ok I reassembled it and everything worked ok I am gonna have my grandfather come over in the morning and strip the wires for me. Thanks for all your help I will let you know if it it turns out ok.

Were are from. It maybe safer to find someone who can install it.. If you post your General Location in a thread then you will find someone..

Im in Canada (Ontario) I do installs all day... I have had to fix so many brave attemps from people its kinda scary what happens to the poor consoles.

Well folks I thank you all for your help especially larry. However I was not entirely successful. When I finished it I closed it up and put in a backup it worked flawlessly. I then remembered I had to put electrical tape over it that's when the trouble started as soon as I opened it the wires popped right off they would not even bend over sigh. Well Apparently I am good at soldering since my wii still works (THANK GOD) but the wires modchip.com gives you are crap it took my grandfather ten minutes to strip all of them. My points are still intact although a little bit of wire is sticking out of them. I am gonna get better wire. I am still thinking about getting a professional to do it so any suggestions would be very nice. I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania Olyphant. I tinned all the points but they should be ok. Thanks again.

Well if the backup was working you should have left it alone.

Seems like your soldering job was fine but the wire was crap..

Either get better wire and do it yourself again or send it in.

As I stated before teammodders offers instillation so check them out for further information.
