Whick double layer DVD should I use to back up movies?

I want to back up some of my dvd movies, but instead of compressing them using dvdshrink or something like that, I'd like to back them up on double layer dvd's, to preserve the quality.
My question is, what kind of dvd should I use, DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL?
My DVD burner can burn on both types of media, and I'm guessing that I should use DVD+R DL, am I right?

yes ! and First last & always Verbatim DVD+R DL Atleast until maybe Taiyo yuden comes out with DL media ! Good luck & happy Burning !

for movies on Dual Layer, i'd say use the cheapest brand: PLayo $1 a peice. im a big supporter of good media like verbatim, but for movies on DL, use Cheaper discs, unless money isn't an issue.
use +R DL because it can booktype to DVD-ROM.

All DL drives are compatible with Verbatim DVD+R DL media. DVD-R DL has significant compatibility with DL drives except the most recent drives being released. Most drives are also compatible with Ritek DL media, but the 8X DVD+R can be tricky on older drives because it uses a different manufacturing method to reduce costs and improve yields.
In general, try to use DVD+R 2.4X or 4X DL media unless you have a newer DL drive. If your drive is very new, it may be worth testing DVD-R DL or 8X DVD+R DL to see if they work.
Compatibility is much more restricted with DL media than with regular DVD+/-R discs. Using the cheapest brands is not good advice because there are so many problems with compatibility and even quality if the "cheap" versions are B-grade DL. And as soon as Taiyo Yuden releases DL media, the quality will have the typical excellence of TY production--but they won't work in most drives. That will be interesting. Those who continually bash non-Verbatim or TY brands will have to choose: 1) to say TY has gone bad; 2) TY DL media are all counterfeit; 3) CMC is making TY DL now; or 4) compatibility is an issue afterall.
The advice about booktyping DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM is correct. Older DVD players cannot understand how a disc can be "recordable" and "double-layer" at the same time. Their firmware does not allow both categories to exist at the same time because these players pre-date DVD+/-R DL media. Calling the discs "DVD-ROM" satisfies the player and allows them to play the discs. That cannot be done for DVD-R DL media.

Thanks a lot guys, all the knowledge found on this forum really amazes me.
So it's settled, I'll use verbatim DVD+R DL. I don't think that I'll have any compatibility issues, my dvd burner is a Pioneer 110D, I don't think it's that old. I'll also burn the dvd's at the slowest possible speed, I think I read somewhere that the slower you burn them, the less problems you have.

Verbatim DVD+R DL are the best,made in Singapore.
I have never had a bad burn or playback with these.
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

My 100% effective way for Dual Layer: Verbatim DVD+R DL, AnyDVD, CloneCD. Burn speed > 4x.Perfect results 100% of the time. :)
