Hey guys,

so i was doing some Harddrive cleaning, i put a bunch of garbage file son crappy Office Depot badged Ativa DVD +R media. This is the second of the 20 Ativas i burned:

That patch there isn't ketchup. It's rough "burn residue" that i found on the disc after the burn had failed. wow! i was scared this killed my baby Pioneer 111D, but thank jesus it didn't. This is why u should avoid crap media, because it might just poop your drive. i got lucky this time. When burn fails and leaves a physical residue- that's some very very serious failure in the drive and some very bad media. I would have been very unhappy if this disc killed my drive.

oh and btw i have burned well over 500 discs, and this is disc related coaster Number 3.

Good Luck with burning discs everyone!

That flaw appears to be an oil stain on the polycarbonate that occurred either after molding or in the dye spin coating process. The slur in the pattern suggests that it was not a new stain but had not fully cured/evaporated after getting on the disc. This will not appear on the disc to the human eye, but in-line scanners should have picked it up. Your drive got half way through the damaged section before giving up. It will not have any effect on the drive--except for extra time trying to resolve the flaw--but the disc is worthless. As a DVD+R it could have been used for a 2GB program, but if it were a DVD-R it would not have been usasable at all.

This happens to every manufacturer, but good in-process controls catch these defects and prevent them from leaving the factory--or even getting to the vacuum deposit chamber so as not to waste the silver.

thanks for info. The stain, for sure, was not there before the burn. something defianlty cooked while it was in the drive. And after a sceond look, i could scratch the spot off, so it seems like it's a deposition of some sort, from heat probabaly. My theory is what you said - the oil was on the disc and when the laser got to the part it fried the oil.

but whatever the case to play with numbers, this was the second Ativa disc i have burned. So 1 out of 2 Ativa disc is crap! But actaully i burn about 20 total so 1 out of 20 is crap. Then again, i have burned up to 30 Sonys on a given day and 0 failure.

Methinks cheap media is not always cheap. It can turn out more expensive than top quality. Whatever posessed you to buy them in the first place? or did they come in your cornflakes packet?
