Xp Networking Problem can ping ip but not computer name

Ok so I have a network set up 2 lappys and one desktop.

just to note

* all are on the same workgroup
* all firewalls are disabled
* one of the laps (xp) and the desktop (vista and xp) work fine together

My deal is I can ping all the ips of the computers in the workgroup from the "messed up" computer but can't ping any of the computer names. on top of that when I type in \\"ip addy of one of the computer" i.e. \\192.168.1.131 (my desktop's ip) I get...

Windows cannot find "\\192.168.1.131". Chech the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the start button and then clicking search.

Wtf is up with that? I've never run into that message ever in networking. it's like it doesn't even try to connect to the computer

This thread is kinda half ass I know I'm just so annoyed by this and I don't know what I should say I've done cause I've tried everything I can think of (ipconfig /dnsflush and /registerdns didn't help either)

If anyone has an idea I would love to hear it
