OK, so how long has this been the case. So it's illegal to back up your own games. Well in that case how come rewritable drives arn't illegal? Can't you use that to make bootleg cd's? That statement is way too vague. A lot of things that you can you for illegal purposes you can use for legal purposes as well.

HAVING A CD/DVD BURNER WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO BYPASS COPY PROTECTION ALONE.
you can copy nothing these days without some form of crack or modchip or softmod to enable it to work on the machine. This applies to xbox,ps2,wii + pc. it is these methods that bypass the copy protection not the burner
bootleg music cds unless DRM protected, have no copy protection to bypass and is a different kettle of fish

Making a backup of a Wii game technically is not breaking the law because your not bypassing the copy protection on the game disc.
You end up breaking the law by playing the Wii backup game on a moded Wii system which the Modchip is what bypasses the copy protection.
Some legislators are trying to amend the DMCA to let buyers make backups of their owned material under the fair use act. But more then likley this will never happen because most legislatures are no longer for the people but for Big Business.
