Sent My Wii for Repair

Well I sent my Wii in for repair. It needed a new DVD drive. Anyway, I was wondering what you guys thought. Will they replace my drive with one that is unmoddable? What do you think the chance of this is?

They aren't 'unmoddable'! They are just harder to mod! Anyways, they might, but I really wouldn't know!

same here...its all speculation. but if the past is any indication, you'll probably get an older refurbished one anyway. if you're a manufacturer, you want to get all the mileage you can out of any production unit, so the older ones that CAN be fixed are redistributed when they take yours in -- in most cases, they aren't obligated to send you a new one as a replacement. That's the way it worked for my PS2 and old N64 anyway.
Which might be good for you...mod-able + new firmware with limited warranty (well, until you mod it).
you're a very small minority of users. protecting against mods doesn't outweigh cost per unit production.

Thanks guys. I now have some idea of what may happen. I was kind of figuring that they'd just use old working drives from other broken Wiis. I read in another post that modding to the new ones is remarkably hard. I'm just hoping it won't come to that because I doubt I'll be able to get it modded then because I haven't seen any detailed instructions on how to mod the new ones.

The question is, why are you accepting a repair when the wii should still be under store warrenty? Bring it back from where you got it and demand a new one.

It's not under warranty simply because my father tried modding it and screwed up the solder points. It was too hard for him to solder to the legs, so I paid for a repair.

Quick question for you dude! Did you try and mod it, and it failed, and now you are sending it in? Or did it just stop working?! Because, I soldered a chip into the Wii wrong, and now it won't even power on anymore! Just wondering, because If you did try to mod it, and Nintendo sent you a new one, I would like to know (so that I can send this one back)! Thanks Man!

Yeah, my father did. I just told them the dvd drive was spitting discs out and nothing would play. I told them I opened it to try and see what was wrong...lied and told them I got mad and threw the dvd drive away. They replaced my whole Wii for $67.50. Not free, but still a good deal.
Also, did you cross two points together? Cause if you did, maybe you can just desolder the points. I know my father crossed two of the legs together and couldnt get the solder to come off. Thats why I had to get another dvd drive, but they basically send you a brand new one for only $67.50, including shipping there and back. Tell them you want them to send a UPS label. It's 7.50. But see, its only 60 bucks to repair, and the 7.50 covers shipping.
If they try to charge you 75 bucks plus shipping just tell them you've barely had it, they'll cave in and lower the price.
Anyway, they fell for all of this, hook , line, and sinker.
Ohh yeah, remember to TAKE the dvd drive OUT if you do this.

Hold on u said u took the drive out and sent it back??? I have a dead wii and I don't know if I should either repair it with Nintendo or modchipman.com. If u tell them its not working or whatever they send you a new wii and u have to send your messed up one back? Do they ask for Credit card because I have none right now.

You can pay with check or money order.
Tell them it was spitting discs out, you don't have the dvd drive anymore(cause if you keep the dvd drive they'll know you messed with it), and they send you a label. You put your old wii in a box, drop it off at a UPS box or place when you get your label, then ship it. They gave me a brand new Wii. Total cost: $67.50

I just called and told them I opened it because the drive is dead and my game was stuck in it. I knew they were gonna say its gonna be out of warranty but I didn't care. It came up to $75 total so that for a new wii or at least working wii doesn't sound bad to me. Oh and it doesn't seem like it would matter if they noticed you opened it because they know its opened and out of warranty.

That just seems hard to believe! You took a Drive out of your Wii, and contacted Nintendo, and said you didn't have it anymore... Wouldn't that void your Warranty because you opened the Wii?!

I would have thought so!
My mod when well but I though if it didn't I could maybe get hold of a new drive and fix it myself, but if I could'nt I was going to send it back without saying I opend it or toched it in anyway.
Then send it off and see what happend, as there is not a lot a tech team are gunna do if they find an opend Wii there just going to fix it like MS tech team do.
I would so love to work for Nintendo Tech team, fixing Wii's all day.
I would so start my own console repair shop with all the drives and motherboard that I would steal lol.

If you don't believe me, I can take a picture of my new working Wii on a screen and the DVD drive out of the old one. Still got the old drive. Haha.
