Hi,
First of all not sure of which forum to post this.

I am fairly new to newsgroups. I have been using Blueyonder newsgroup with Grabit for a few months and all has been Ok until the last week or so when lots of the files I would normally be downloading have not been posted.i.e 24 files and only 9/24 getting posted to down load. I am led to believe that it is blueyonder thats the problem as most people say it is crap. It has been ok for me for all I need. The usual tv programs and latest movies plus it is FREE. Can anybody give me some advice on good cheap newsgroups or any other newsgroup provider that is also free. I am in UK.

Thanks for your Help.

I am on former Blueyonder (UK) cable internet, now called Virgin Media. Normally it is quite good for a free Usenet service. Good luck trying to find another free one!!!!!!!

However there is a temporary problem with the BY News server this week.

I expect it'll be OK after the weekend.

Message from Blueyonder 26th June

We lost part of the storage due to a quick succession double disk
failure. This happened yesterday morning, the effect of this is a loss
of about 1/16 of the storage, so there will be incompletes, but doest
effect the normal operation of the platform. We do also have another
issue with one of our peers, where we have seen a significant drop in
the articles there are sending us over the past few days and we don't
seem to be making it up through our others. We are trying to set up a
communication channel with them but are also looking to set up new peers
to overcome this shortfall.

Hi Indochine,

Thanks for the info,I will give it another week and wait and see what happens. It had been working fine then all of a sudden most of the files were not getting posted. As far as free groups I was only inquiring as not used any other.

As already explained above, the former Blueyonder (UK), now Virgin Media, has technical problems. You will just have to wait until they have fixed it.

see text group blueyonder.support.usenet (on server news-text.blueyonder.co.uk) for updates.

Ok thanks. I have subscribed to a newsgroup on a trial period to see if it is worth while and I must admit it is FAR superior. Will see how things go.

Thanks

1. Start your news reader program.

2. Add server. Name of server is "news-text.blueyonder.co.uk"

3. Get list of groups.

4. Choose group "blueyonder.support.usenet"

Read articles. Headers will inform you of topic. Most articles for last 2 days are about the broken server.

You just double click on the header I think. I don't use Newsleecher.

People are still reporting around 60% completion, it seems a bit better than it was a few days ago on the groups I use. This happened about 2 years ago and it took about 2-3 weeks for them to fix.

the majority of complete files are the PAR files and not the RAR files consequently their are not enough files to make a repair

I have been downloading off quite a few binary groups, rar sets 300 - 500 MB size. I use newsbin, and I use all three Blueyonder front ends with Newsbin to get parts off all of them.

fe1.news.blueyonder.co.uk
fe2.news.blueyonder.co.uk
fe3.news.blueyonder.co.uk

Blueyonder have announced they are rebuilding their usenet server disk system next Monday 9th July.

Quote:
For your information maintenance has been scheduled for Monday morning
at 8:00am on the binary news platform news.blueyonder.co.uk. This will
appear on the status page shortly. The work is to reinstate the storage
that was lost over a week ago due to a double disk failure in an array.
There will be a period of approximately 15 minutes where
news.blueyonder.co.uk will be completely inaccessible. As a result of
this work around 50% of the articles will be lost and for 12 hours or so
after the maintenance we will only be using 50% of the storage until new
news spools are generated. Once completed new articles will be written
to all of the storage and normal retention levels should be established
in the following days after.

We have also established new peers to improve article completion
although this wont be particularly evident until the storage work takes
place on Monday.
