Dazed and confused - hard time picking media

I am seriously lost in deciding which media to use. I have a Pioneer DVR-111D burner. I am currently using Sony DVD-Rs. Up to recently I have had no problems with this media. But 2 new 100 spindle Sony DVD-R spindles have been giving me buffer under run errors for any burn after the first. I have to reboot after each burn, in order to burn the next disc. A pack of memorex for testing purposes, burn just fine one after another. No matter how many successive burns I do, I get now buffer under run. So from what I have read thus far, Verbatim seem to be fine, as well as Taiyo Yuden. But the Verbatim that are on sale, are in a 100 spindle. So I'm worried if I buy these, they may be the code MCC03RG20, that people are reporting issues with. The spindle has Made in Taiwan labeling. Not sure if that is a concern. I'm in Canada, so this 100 Verbatim spindle is usually $65, but currently on sale for $35 at future shop. I don't mind going with the 8x or 16x TY DVD-Rs, but I would have to buy online. Can anyone suggest which would be the safer buy. Much appreciated.

The bad verbatim(MCC03RG20)are the minus DVD(-). The 16X plus(+) verbatim are excellent, when I did quality test's I was getting 99%, better than the Taiyo Yuden (which were 93/94%). From the description of your problem you might have some sort of hardware problem. Buffer underrun is usually caused when your harddrive is not fast enough in providing data to your burner. Maybe you need to check your DMA settings, also if your harddrive is almost full to capacity you'll get this type of problem because lack of swap space.
Alot of people here at the forums use Sony DVD media with no problem(I got 85% on quality test "good but not good enough for movie backups".I would check your hardware and fix the buffer underrun problem first before trying different media, and I would stay away from the memorex.

So can you think of any reason why I would get buffer under run with the Sonys, and not the cheaper grade memorex? I've never seen this happen, where one brand consistently gives the buffer under run error and another burns flawlessly.

Memorex is no worse and no better than Sony media. If buffer underruns are truly the problem--and the media should make no difference there because the buffer is a function of your drive's memory and the ability of your computer to feed data to the drive on time--I can't explain it. I suspect that the Sony media you are using may simply not be compatible with your drive while the Memorex media are. The error reports should not state "buffer underrun" unless the drive is having such severe power calibration problems that it is running out of memory--not very likely. Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden also ought to be fine with that drive, but I suspect the versions of Sony media you have are not compatible.

I think that is just a bad statement to make. I don't know where you get your information but just hit the search bar. Memosux is only regarded as good media by those that are hard-headed, foolish, or lucky.
Update your firmware, make sure your DMA setting is correct, and buy made in Japan discs.

The 16x Sonys have been wonderful, I've not had any problem with them. Media to use TYs (mostly get em online) or 8x Sonys DVD+Rs Made in Japan which are rare now a days, Verbs, and Sonys.

I get my information from test reports: Audio Development CATs, Expert, Datarius, Pulstech drives, electroscopy, and so forth. That information is balanced against marketing reports--Santa Clara Consulting, MMIS, NPD, Understanding & Solutions, etc.--as well as published specifications from Philips, the DVD Forum, DVD+RW Alliance, OSTA, and Ecma.
I'm not sure getting opinions from untrained users is as helpful.

I'm saying that when Taiyo Yuden makes Memorex discs and Sony discs, the quality of the discs is the same. When Memorex and Sony source from Ritek or CMC, then the quality is the same. When Lite-on makes Memorex or Sony drives, the quality is the same--even if the firmware is more restrictive or less up to date on the Sony drives.

I don't know if Sony ever used CMC. They seem to have supplied everyone else at one time or another, either in North America or Europe.
TY manufactures some Memorex CD-Rs and some DVD-R media. Those media are rare, probably because when 2X DVD-R media came out, TY was a big supplier of optical discs to Memorex. Best Buy and several other large retailers wanted to get into DVD in a big way, but TY decided at the last minute to cancel all Memorex DVD orders and supply only Japanese brands instead. That really angered a lot of retailers in the U.S. Maybe that's a reason they can't be found on the shelves under their own brand. (Pun intended.) Every now and then TY will supply several companies on spot buys and show up under unusual brands.

Dirty secret: CMC makes MCC media for Verbatim.
Sony has been going downhill for the past year or so, and now that "Made in India" Sony DVDs have hit the market, that decline has accelerated. Early reports have them not being good at all.
On the other hand, CMC and Ritek have made some very good media. HP-Branded CMCMAG.E01 (8x) and CMCMAG.AM3 (16x) have both given me great results and longevity on a variety of burners.
The newer RitekP16's (I've seen them show up as Office Depot branded) have been giving TY quality initial scans (too early to know about degradation).
More Memorex specific, I'd match the 16x DVD+R RICOHJPNR03 against any Sony DVD+R except for the old Taiyo ones.

Ritek manufactures RicohJPN using Ricoh dyes. Ricoh has an excellent reputation that may get sullied when people use their 8X DVD+R DL media, all of which use inverse stacking and may not be compatible with most older DL drives. Nothing wrong with the discs--it's the damned compatibility issue again. Once 8X DL media are common, it may be wise to invest in a new DL drive since firmware support for older drives is almost non-existent. Regular Ricoh/Ritek DVD+/-R media are very good with strong support from many drive manufacturers.
Sony did use CMC media in the past when they bought hard-coated 8cm camcorder discs with TDK's MID code manufactured by CMC. It does get confusing!
