So after all the reading on this forum, I have decided to go with the Verbatums. Before I take advantage of the Future Shop Sale, and stack up on some Verbatums, should I stay away from the 16x -Rs. Is this reported issue confirmed to be just a bad lot or is this an actual problem with all the disc. In which case I should stick with the +Rs which are on the same sale. Can anyone confirm either way? TIA.

Personally myself i use the 16x+r verbs and have great results, but i have used the -r's too. and have had no problems with them at all. the only thing with the -r's you cant book type with them. in general i'd say you cant go wrong with either. you will get a bad batch from time to time with any brand but over all verbatim and TY you cant go wrong with either +/- format.

Heres a link to a thread on the out sourcing of Verbs http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/509466 scroll down to unjust2 and read down. Chris MCC owns the stampers for the Verbatim DVDs. Mitsubishi may have pilot lines for test production, but the actual production of Verbatim DVDs is done at CMC, Singapore, New Delhi (MBI), and perhaps another factory. CMC/MCC can be confusing: CMC is the factory that makes most of the Verbatim DVDs using MCC stampers. From JoeRyan

If you are going to use the verbs, stay well away from the Made In India discs.Not only do they look differant than the taiwan/japanese discs (silver rim at the edgeof the dye) but they dont perform as well.Personally id use TY with the 02 dye..the 8x discs, but thats just from my experiances

pork pie,fish pie,cherry pie,hairy pie.Ill eat em all

I got burned with the verb 16X- (code MCC03RG20), I haven't bought any since that incident 6 months ago. Those where giving me 35% quality. If you decide to risk it, just buy one 25 pack on sale(of course), and do your own quality test. The verbs 16X+ where testing out at 99% quality for me. Who knows maybe the company fixed there equipment but for right now I wouldn't risk it.

i do stand corrected i did have 200 of the 16x-r verbs i got for a christmas present this past christmas and they coded out as the MCC03RG20 and they were god awfull. i took them back.. but i have gotten more -r's that were regular verbs and not the MCC03RG20 and were perfect.

thanks for bringing that up in the PM CHRIS... i totaly forgot about that bunch of crap..lol

I am not familiar with the different MID codes of Verbatim DVD-R 16X, but I suspect that if there is more than one version, only one is giving people problems. The same dye is used for DVD+/-R media, but the stampers are very different. The manufacturing process is also identical except for the manufacturing of the glass master and the initialization of the DVD-R after manufacturing. If the problem is not lack of support for a particular MID code, then the next possibility is a problem with the stamper, probably the pre-pits which are the hardest thing to make regarding DVD-R. However, if there are some people with particular drives that work quite well with MCC03RG20, that points to a lack of proper firmware support. Is there anyone who is having good results with that MID code and a particular drive? Is there anyone who had poor results that improved after a firmware update?

@Joe Ryan

funny you ask that.. i have about 12 of those bad -r verbs left. my LH-18A1P lite-on just had a firmware update from GLOG to GLOH. i tried burning 3 of those MCC03GR20's. 2 of them were very bad on the QC scan and one i actually got a 95 on it.. but the 95 wont play and the other 2 do..?????
