I am heavily considering getting a WiiKey, and this is the main thing that is bugging me. I read all about the different region updates that can potentially brick your system, but can Nintendo release a firmware update to a modded wii that would brick it?

It could be possible but they wouldn't.

^huh, are you sure that they wouldnt. I think I am going to get one anyway, and just turn wiiconnect24 off so I can read on here about potentially brick firmware updates.

Well, for me... No they can't. The chips are DVD chips, not motherboard. There is no way to know if you have a chip or not when you update on internet. The only way to do this would be to release a DVD that is declared as out of your region and if read correctly then could brick (because if you had no chip you couldn't lauch it...)

That's what happens with games. But not on the standard internet update.

Someone corrects me if I'm wrong on this ?

the xbox 360 is firmware flashes on the dvd drive and they can tell so they can block live access so maybe your argument is a little flawed

nintendo would not gain any friends by killing a lot of wiis out there as most of us also buy originals - they would lose that custom forever not just this console
plus i think it may be illegal to knowingly break someones hardware - region bricks are unintentional on their part
imho

but the wii mod chips do not modify firmware, so once again....the xbox point is moot. they use modded firmware, which is software inside the hardware, and that can be detected.. the mod chips for the wii do not modify the firmware.

Dratz is A++

What was causing problems were games from different regions that tried to update your Wii.

If you want to be safe, download stuff for your own region.

Or stuff that has had system update disabled.

Reading up and becoming educated on Wii news is the best way to prevent yourself from getting owned.

Regarding a patch that would intentionally brick your Wii... at least in the United States... I don't think Nintendo would put out firmware that would brick your Wii.
...
Lawsuit, lawsuit, lawsuit.

Sue happy American power.
