I was planning to get a PS2 game, and I'm tied between Tales of the Abyss and Rogue Galaxy. Rogue Galaxy really captures my attention, but X-Play gave it a 3/5 and Tales a 4/5. And Rogue scored more than Tales at IGN, but reader reviews were higher for Tales. So, I need your opinion on which I should get, and a short sentence explaining why. Thanks in advance.
You really have to overlook a lot of flaws in Tales of the Abyss to appreciate it because I honestly thought it could have been a truly incredible game, but it lacked polish and refinement, especially the difficulty, potential gameplay depth, perhaps pacing and other things I won't go deeply into although Tales of the Abyss wasn't so bad I suppose as I played it several times and enjoyed it to a certain degree (how's that for a sentence =P).
As for Rogue Galaxy, to me, everything seemed to fall short near the end and things became a bit tedious later like the bland dungeon designs you may have heard of in the reviews at like IGN and the depth of the gameplay was too reminiscent of Xenosaga 1 for me to stomach. Too bad the Director's Cut version of Rogue Galaxy is a Jpn exclusive. I might import it as it's like the DC version that came out in Japan like the DC version of Star Ocean: Til The End of Time, revamped adjustments to the battle system, additional features and improvements except the DC version of SO3 actually came to the U.S. as the first and final product of Star Ocean: Til The End of Time.
If you were to ask me what I would rate better, I'd pretty much rate Tales of the Abyss and Rogue Galaxy both a 7 out of 10. If we're doing decimals too, I'd probably rate Tales of the Abyss only slightly higher to Rogue Galaxy because it introduced me to the Tales of games besides me already knowing of Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube.
Yeah, that's a reason why I took interest in Tales of the Abyss, even though I haven't played any of the recent Tales, I liked the look of the gameplay, with the Star Ocean-like battles. I'm a fan of Star Ocean, ever since I saw the giant game case with 2 discs for the playstation, didn't even know what it was about and just bought it because it looked neat and lengthy. Sure enough I enjoyed it even though it did get VERY difficult. So3: TTEOT didn't seem to let me down either. But thanks for the info, I'm gonna get Tales then, even though the backgrounds in fighting seem bland, but hey, so are the ones in Rogue Galaxy.
