So I started downloading a game for wii, and lately Ive seen some info about a WiiKey software. Here are my very ... noob ... questions:

1. Is WiiKey free?

2. Is WiiKey a software, or ... what?

3. How can I get my burnt games to work on my Wii?

I know these are probably really stupid questions, but Im incredibly new to this.

Yeah those are kinda stupid lol.

Wiikey is a modchip that tricks the Wii drive into thinking that it's an original game.

You have to open up the Wii and find the motherboard and solder on the chip. Then put everything back together and put in your backup.

The Wiikey goes around for 30 bucks now. But you should practice soldering before even trying to attempt this.

For the first question: The WiiKey is not free. It can be purchased on ModChipStore.com or other modchip websites. The price ranges from $18 to $35.

For the second question: The WiiKey is a chip that is manully installed on the Wii. You can either sodder it with wires (Highly recommended) or directly. If you are not confident in your soddering skills, have someone installed for you (properly in a local computer store).

And for your third question: Once the WiiKey is installed properly. You need to download the setup disk software to activate the modchip. The software can be found here http://www.wiikey.cn/resources.html.

I recommend using Maxell DVD-R to burn the setup software on, on a 4x speed. Also use ImgBurn as the burning software. ImgBurn can be found here http://www.imgburn.com. Now, there is a possibility that the setup disk will not work. The Wii tends to be very picky on which DVDs to read. Im only recommending this because I've heard that Maxell tends to work on most Wiis. If Maxell doesn't work, try either Verbatim or Tayio Yuden. Once the chip is activated, your games should work.

And hey, don't feel ashamed about your questions. I just found out about this imformation a few days ago, so your not the only noob. Plus, there are more people who know more then I do about modchips, they will help you out and give you the imformation you need.

In terms of "activation", the setup disc only lets you choose play discs outside your own region (PAL, NTSC). Think about it: if the chip was disabled when installed, you couldn't boot the boot disc! By turning on that feature, you do leave the door open to detection and possible corruption by installing the wrong region's updates. That said, the disc is useful in that it is also a GCOS bootdisc for loading up stubborn imports.

Thank you guys so much! Now...those answers have led me to a few more questions :P

Can I use DVD+R? My drive doesn't support DVD-R.

About burning Wii games...once the download is finished do I just open it with PowerIso and burn it onto a DVD?

Use the burning application that Rusko suggested (ImgBurn). It tends to be the most reliable application to burn Wii ISO games. Plus the software is free.
