I have a problem whereby my new dual layer dvd burner wont burn the blancs dual layer dvdrs i have just bought. I tried to put an AVI compilation together on a dual layer disc. At first the dvd drive did not recognise the disc, eventually it tried to burn for a short time and then failed. I also tried to burn an iso image and again it wouldnt work. I have updated with the latest firm ware, but still no luck. The pc is high spec and less than 6 months old. My dvd drive is a LITE-ON LH-18A1P. The discs that failed were bulqpaq blancs. If anyone has experienced this problem and has any advice it will be much appreciated. Normal 4gb discs work fine.

If you have the latest firmware, this points to the media as the trouble.

Is that Bulkpaq or bulqpaq?
I did not find any Bulkpaq dual layer information.
These guys put thier name on many different media, so you never know what you will get until you see the media code!
You might as well go to Vegas and shoot craps as buy unbranded meida. See link.

I found these DL Bulkpaq for sale. See link. The site list the media code as CMC MAG D01 or CMC MAG D04.
These do not rate very well.

I didnt realise that was a general problem with dual layer discs. I will try the Verbatims. Are all the Verbatim dual layer media reliable or is there a particular type i should get?

Verbatim DL are the standard. All DL drives are tuned to them, but some players will still have problems at the transition point. Ritek may now be the largest producer of DL media; and as more drives include firmware for them, they may become as reliable as Verbatim. I just tested a spindle of CMC DL DVD+R on a Plextor 716 with superb results as good as those of any Verbatim disc, but this is not typical because CMC DL are not well supported by drive manufacturers.
DVD+R is better supported than DVD-R, and many 8X DVD+/-R DL use a new, less expensive method of manufacturing known as inverse stack. The IS method can cause problems with older DL drives that do not have updated firmware. Since that is not likely to happen, it's best to stick with 2.4X media until they run out. When that happens, a new drive is the next step.
