a while back i bought a five pack of memorex DVD+R. i tried repeatedly to burn using them and most of the time it would work. but when i decided to play the burned dvd on my dvd player, it wouldnt work. then when i told someone at work about it, she said that she had the same problem so she bought sony DVD+R. well, since my computer is compatible with both DVD+R and DVD-R, i boutght a 15 pack of sony DVD-R and burned a dvd. well, that one worked in my dvd player just like i was told. anyone have an idea why this is happening with memored DVD+R and DVD-R disks?

Memorex uses different manufacturers some good some not and they might not always be compatible w/ your drive and/or player.
I have some memorex that were made by Ritek and are fine but you never know who you'll get.

Sony if made in Japan are sometimes made by Taiyo Yuden or Sony themselves. The made in Taiwan are also made by Sony.
These manufacturers are usually more compatible w/ drives and players in my experience.

Make sure the firmware of the drive is up to date and try burning at 1/2 the rated speed of the media.

There are a number of elements in the equation: the recording drive, its firmware, the type of disc, the format (A well recorded DVD-R, for example, will work in all DVD players; but a DVD+R will intentionally not work in early Panasonic DVD players or recorders because Panasonic opposed that format.), the recording software, the speed rating of the disc, and the DVD player.

If your DVD player is an older Panasonic model or another type of restricted DVD player, NO DVD+R will work in it, no matter what brand it is.

Sony has no optical factories in Taiwan. Sony discs from Taiwan come from the same factories as discs for Memorex, but they usually have a Sony media code on them that tells the recording drive what laser power to apply. If a drive does not recognize a particular code, it may apply a "default" code that may or may not work well. (Or it may refuse to recognize a disc is in it or, even worse, claim the disc is dirty, defective, or invalid.) It should not be this difficult for consumers, but it is because of the rapid progress of "improvements" and political/marketing battles between brands.

also with the DVD plus R Memorex try booktyping them to DVD-ROM burning NO faster than 6x and see if they playback in your standalone DVD player. usually the DVD dash R format is more compatible with older standalone DVD players.

your best brands of media are Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim or Made In Japan ,Sony,Maxell or Fujifilm

playback compatibility can be affected by the burning software used to backup the DVD also
