Ritek problems - DVD+R 16x

Is anyone else having problems with these discs? I used to use the Ritek Ridata 4x, then the 8x when the 4x were no longer available, and those worked without a hitch (maybe 1-2 coasters out of every 100 burned discs). But I just bought some Ritek Ridata DVD+R 16x because the 8x weren't available any more, and I'm having MAJOR disc problems after burning - skipping, pixelation, stopping, etc. Never had these problems with Ritek before so I'm bummed -- maybe quality control issues with the 16x discs??? (And incidentally, I'm still burning at 4x so it's not a speed-of-burn issue.)
I bought a pack of 100 of these 16x discs from meritline or supermediastore (sorry, I buy regularly from both places so can't remember where I got these) and have burned close to 40 discs so far. On at least 3/4 of the burned discs, I'm getting the kinds of problems I noted above. Nothing about my burning process has changed except the media. :-(
This is VERY frustrating since Ritek had been so reliable (for YEARS and many hundreds if not thousands of burns) and I will certainly not buy the 16x discs again (and the 8x seem not to be available any more). I just ordered a pack of Taiyo Yuden discs from supermediastore -- have never tried them but have read good things about them so I'm hoping for the best; they are a bit more expensive than the Ritek but if they work, I don't mind.
Anyway -- has anyone else had problems with Ritek Ridata 16x bought from a reputable dealer? The ones I got came in 2 cake boxes of 50 with red wrapping.

I own a Sony DRU-510A drive, roughly the same age as your drive, the good news, a great drive, the bad news, doesn't handle the newer 16X media due to the fact that they haven't updated the firmware in a few years. Firmware PageThis leaves you with one of two options, stick with 8X media as long as you can still find it (getting tough I know) or bite the bullet and get a newer drive for the newer media 16X media. I still use the 510A to burn CD's on my oldest daughter's computer. My current favorite drive Lite-On

Thanks for the info!! Didn't occur to me that it could be the drive, given that the problem started with the new media, but what you wrote made sense. The TY discs I just bought are 8x so hopefully they will work, but it's probably time for me to buy a new drive anyway.

The Taiyo Yuden 8X media will work perfectly well on your drive. The 16X TY or just about anyone else's 16X will not work because they have new MID codes not in your drive's firmware memory.
Since almost all factories have moved to 16X, a new drive makes sense. Look for one capable of 8X DVD+/-R DL. They will include the new firmware for the new DL discs that can give older DL drives big problems. The 16X Ritek media will be just as reliable in a newer 16X drive as they were for you in the past.

Well, I've put aside my Ritek 16x discs for now. I did go out and buy a new drive today but haven't set it up yet -- it's another Sony (already had 2, figured I'd stick with the brand that has worked for me so far). I have a couple hundred Ritek 8x discs left (had opened the 16x package just to make sure the discs worked -- then found out the hard way that they didn't) as well as the TY 8x ones I just ordered. I will check those as soon as I get them and if they work as well as expected, I may order more of them while they last!
I do hate to have to stop using what is really still a perfectly good drive just because the media is no longer compatible. Would there be any point to asking Sony for firmware to fix the problem? Or is this just planned obsolescence???

P.S. Just found some of the Ritek 8x discs at amazon -- looks like they are on clearance as a pack of 45 8x DVD+R discs plus 5 4x DVD+RW discs was only $10.45. I ordered a ton of them as this is the only place I've found them online as of today. (On amazon the regular 50- and 100-packs of the 8x DVD+R are listed as "unavailable," just like everywhere else I've checked.)
I am still curious about the firmware issue, though, and why major companies like Sony don't keep theirs updated. I mean, come on, the drive is only about 2-1/2 years old!! (OK, I know in computer terms that's ancient, but on principle I am so annoyed at having to stop using something that still works.)

Bloody know what you mean...I have resorted to buying my 8x Riteks from ebay.(in Australia) So far no hiccups.
Maybe they have bought all the remaining 8x GO5`s...Who knows.

Karen,
You bought a new Sony drive. That's why they don't support older drives. I'll bet you paid less for a "better" drive, too. That's why the drive companies laid off most of the firmware engineers who once supported the older drives. It's the new mode of economics and progress.

JoeRyan, I laughed at your reply, then realized you were undoubtedly right!! :-(
Hopefully with the 8x Riteks I have left, plus the 8x TY ones I ordered last week, plus the 8x Riteks I was able to find on clearance at amazon, I'll be able to "wear out" my old drive before having to switch over to the new one.
Planned obsolescence, indeed.
