jukebox zen xtra wont work w/out windows media 11!

my creative jukebox zen xtra 30g for some reason wont connect unless i have windows media format 11 runtime (which requires service pack 2). i dont like service pack 2 b/c it kills my internet speed but for some reason it wont work with the previous windows media version. the official creative drivers done seem to work no matter whatbecause of my firmware version. is there a way around any of this?
