What is the best way to do this? Do you usually just use a desolder braid? I'm scared shitless of lifting off pads.

Just heat the pad and pull the wire out when the solder is melted. But don't leave the iron their too long.

Yeah desoldering braid is fine, just be careful not to lift pads, do everything very slowly

make sure when using desoldering braid to not keep it on too long. It can if left on the chip for too long melt the plastic on the chip.
