So I've just installed my WiiD mod chip (in US - NTSC Wii) and I'm having trouble getting backup Wii disks to work. I apologize for the following lengthy thread but here is what I've tried...

I know everyone on forums says this... but I really do have a ton of experience soldering (I've almost completed my PhD in EE) so I'm 99.9% certain that the install went fine in terms of hardware.

However the wii will still not play backup games. Regular games play fine (such as Wii sports and Zelda).

I know that Wiis are picky about the DVD media they take so I've tried both:

- HP DVD+r 8x (recorded on 2x and 8x speeds) &
- TDK DVD-r 16x (recorded on 2x)

I've tried recording the iso in nero and ImgBurn. I've tried these backups:

- Sonic.and.the.Secret.Rings.USA.Wii-PARADOX.[GaMesFive.NeT]
- Mario_Party_8_USA_Wii-VORTEX

I've checked forums and I know that NTSC wiis have had no trouble with these torrents. I have also tried installing the WiiD update on both the DVD brands and I installed the optional reset.

SO WHAT IS WRONG! Should I try ANOTHER brand of DVD. Is there something wrong with my WiiD? Anyone know what is going on?

Thanks in advance!

How new is the Wii that you installed the WiiD on?

If it is a newer Wii take a look at the chipset and make sure it is a D2B and not a D2C chipset. If it is a D2C chipset then the WiiD will not be compatible with that newer chipset. There are no Modchips as of yet that are compatible with a D2C chipset.

If it is a D2B chipset then check and make sure you don't have one of the chipset with legs cut from it. If you have 1 of these D2B chipsets then you will need to do a little modification to the chipset to solder to the legs that have been cut.

For more information on these type of chipsets go to the link below(make sure you read all the pages to the below thread)...

Ok, I will do this first thing in the morning and post my reply.

It is strange that this isn't mentioned anywhere on the WiiD website! Nor did the representative mention this when I emailed!

As far as I know none of the Modchip sites offer this information. It is up to the consumer to make sure they have a Wii system that is compatible with a Modchip.

Agreed. But it should also be a responsibility of the vendor to advertise that their product may not work with some Wii consoles. You shouldn't have to dig around in obscure forums for half a day to find out that your console is too new... That information should be on the website and they should recommend that you check.

Just my two cents.

Anyway. Even though I have work tomorrow I couldn't sleep not knowing... Any low and behold, its the GC2-D2B chipset with legs cut off! So back to the soldering iron.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I AM FOREVER IN YOUR DEBT.

At least you can solder to the cut legs and are not SOL with a D2C chipset.

Good luck with the modification and installing the WiiD on those cut pins.

I also will give you a few other links that can be helpful.

First link is a region compatibility list. No Modchip out there is 100% compatible with all out of region game disc. So you will need to check the below link and make sure the game disc (if out of region) is compatible with your Wii region game system...

Below is a link on how to protect your Wii from a region brick issue. For more information go to the link and read up...

Also make sure you update the WiiD with the version 02 update disc.
