Hi all, I am brand new to this board. Just have several questions.
1. I just purchased a new Dell 8200 which comes with a built-in DVD+RW/CD-RW combo drive. Is this the best DVD burning drive out there. I have heard or read that this drive can not use DVD-R.
2. And is there a way to back up normal DVDs using a program of some sort for this drive.
3. What is authorizing?
4. Is there a way to back up my PS 2 games using this drive (the main reason I bought the combo drive in the first place ).
Thank you all. I am just so confused with all those DVD-Ram, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW. Just which one is the best out there right now?

First of all, you're posting now in the wrong forum, we have a separate newbie area.
Secondly, bothering to spend five minutes and reading through posts would have solved most of your questions by now. But you didn't. Nice.
Anyway.
1) The drive you have can't burn DVD _minus_ R/RW discs, only DVD _plus_ RW discs. DVD+RW discs cost significantly more than DVD-R or DVD-RW discs. Best burner, IMHO, is Pioneer A04/104.
2) Yes, same methods work for DVD+RW as they work for DVD-R/RW. Simply read through our guides and forums for instructions.
3) Authorizing is the process where your ATM machine asks your pin code or your computer asks your password. Authoring anyway is the process where you generate menu structure and put all the videos to DVD layout in order you want them to appear on final DVD. Authoring tools then normally generate either DVD image or VIDEO_TS directory for you, which you then burn to DVD using separate software, like Nero.
4) Yes, there is. Primo Prassi at least does this, but you need to have a mod chip on your PS2 in order to get the games working after this.
DVD-R/RW is "the best" -- not necessarily the "best", but most common anyway.

Hi, thanks for the help. I did bother to read through many posts, but I still have many questions. I appreciate your response.
So, is my DVD+RW/CD-RW combo that I have is just a waste in other words.
Will there be a future program that will allow me to burn using DVD-R?

Simply : No. DVD+R/W and DVD-R/W are different on physical level and can't be "flashed" to support other formats. That's what I think anyway.

Thanks again for the response.
Will the price on blank DVD+RW disc ever go down?
Sorry to ask again, but did I make a mistake of getting a builtin DVD+RW drive.
Thanks

Probably it will go down, they still try to fight against the "minus camp".

Its a bit similar to the old VHS -vs- Betamax war - the two are different formats capable of producing the same result - but it seems there is a lot more support from the DVD-R camp and therefore I would expect it to win - I would also HOPE it to win otherwise my investment .... ;)

What should I do then. Man, I just shelled out $380.00 for the DVD+RW combo. I just don't feel like getting another one anytime soon, and the worst part is that the combo drive is a built-in. I can even sell it. Please guys, any advice would help. I would also appreciate if you guys can link me up with some DVD burning programs that'll work. Thanks so much.
(I am very busy at both work and school, so please don't blame me for not checking out the board first before posting)

What the hell? What kind of school do you go to that already make you come back now, I feel for you man. Look, for programs, get something like Nero from Kazaa or other programs. Nero is really the easiest to use.

DVD+RW drives are not useless, their support is almost as wide in stand-alones as it is for DVD-RW discs. The problem is really that discs cost more than DVD-R/W discs, but definately the purchase is not useless -- all the ripping methods, etc are exactly the same for "plus" as they're for "minus".

Hey guys, thanks for all the answers. After posting this thread, I felt better.
So all the DVD burners are almost alike with the major difference lie in the blank disc prices right? I hope this DVD+RW drive can make backups that I can use in both my PS2 and my DVD players.

Ah, no prob. And I don't unfortunately give my ICQ number on forums, but you can reach me from IRCNet @ #afterdawn if you know how to use IRC.
