I just bought a samsung, Home Theater, and it won't play at all a ripped dvd.

Says "Playback is Prohibited"

The users manual has info regarding CSS , and not playing Pirated movies

Obviously you need to use better quality media and not burn at the max rate.

tried both verbatims and tdk's which are both very good quality media to burn.don't burn above 4x so thats almost certainly not a problem.it must be a samsung problem with playing backed up dvds.

Check your manual to see what DVD formats it will play....

My unit won't play at all

"Play Prohibited" is what I get from my unit.
I think the key work is prohibited, but as bilbo65 say's I'm going to check the DVD format, it's a stretch but probably worth it.

actually...my manual gave no details about the formats it supported so thats a great piece of help.i think its more to do with samsung's protection policy.my chinese dvd player's got an end of an a/v cord in it so can't use it for a while.anybody know whether connecting it to my a/v receiver with s-video will allow playback thru my monitor thru a/v?

One of the long time users at CDFreaks has an idea about what is going on. See here.
