Here's my situation. I have been using Verbatim 16X -R's exclusively for a long time. (I learned to use Verb's from this forum.)I have been buying them from Newegg regularly, and have had very few duds after burning well over 1000 of them. But I just got a sale email from Supermediastore, where they are selling, "Taiyo Yuden Premium Silver Thermal Lacquer 8X DVD-R Media 100 Pack in Cake Box Spindle" for $29.99 with free shipping. I have never used the real TY brand because my only experience with them they turned out to be fakes. So what I want to know is if this is a good idea for me to purchase. Compared to the Verb's I will save about $6-$8 depending if they charge me sales tax. (Newegg has to charge me tax since both they and I are in CA.) Next, I usually burn my 16X Verbs at 8X based on good advice from this forum. So will I have to burn these 8X TY's at 4X? And if so how much time will that add to my process? Will it truly double the burn time, or what? I use Nero for my burning if that helps.
After great success with the Verb's I'm reluctant to switch, but around a 20-25% savings is hard to turn down. So please advise me as to what path would be best to take, and let me know if I do purchase these if are there any tricks in using them.
As always thanks for your help. You folks are the BEST!!
I have news for you, you'll have to pay taxes on purchases from SMS as well since they too are in CA. That said, I would stick w/ the verbs for the following reasons; there's absolutly nothing wrong w/ verbs (you've confirmed this yourself), verbs can be bought at local stores (on sale) for like $26/100 pcs, the verbs are 16x thereby reducing your process time, you may (slim chance, but it happens) get a bad batch of verbs but they're not likely to be faked like the TYs and lastly verbatim is great media.
As far as how to get the most out of using them, update your DVD drive's firmware.
if you buy the TY's from SMS you will not get fakes, you can check the inner hub and they should say GGG???????
also you can probably burn those TY's at 8x, you should tty them at 6x and 4x to see what produces better results(nero's cd/dvd scan), they should all give as good results as the Verbs
I've had great experiences with both brands, they're both great never had any coasters that weren't my fault. I personally like the Verbs better I've had great quality scans with em, you can get em easier too.
The Silver Shiny 8X Dvd-r Taiyo Yudens From SMS are The real deal Mc Neal !!!!!!!!! Atleast the ones from SMS are ! That being said The Verbatims are available to you Locally & probably Cheaper onsale as Playr mentioned earlier !Having used both I would stick with The Verbatims simply because the Label surface is less subject to Fingerprints & smudges compared with The Taiyo Yuden THermal Printables - The ones they emailed you about ! If I were going to do thermal Printing I woud probably Use those ! Also Although you can use sharpie Pens with those taiyo yudens The Verbatims surface takes the marker Better IMho ! I suppose it all depends on what your after ? If You want a Coomercial/Professional Look ( Like THe MOvie DVD's you Buy ) Then Use Inkjet printable media ! If Your not as concerned about how Pretty the label looks Use The Regalar DVD media Verbatims Ect!!! & a sharpie pen !, If You want a Slightly more Proffesional Look lettering wise then get a Thermal Printer and so THermal Printable media Like the taiyo yudens ! On a strictly Technical/Practical basis You really Can't go wrong with either !!!! So it Boils down to cost and or Preference in the end ! Good luck & happy Shopping !!! Ciao!
I know I have been on solid ground with the Verb's, but where are you getting 100 packs for $26.00??!! If I could get that price I never would have asked the question! Maybe you guys have stores with that kind of good sales, but if you'll let me know where I'd sure appreciate the heads up.
Thanks again for all the great insights. This has been my favorite site for information for a long time. I just wish there was a site like this for all my other computer questions. (Like the Adobe Acrobat problems I've been having!) Oh, well...
