How exactly do thay work ...
lets say I have a 1080i TV and an HDMI cable will the Upscaler upscale a dvd that was made to show at 480i upscale it to 1080i or something closer. Or how about my DVD backup will it take a DVD that I backed up in Shrinkit at 50 - 60% and show it at a high ratio the what I had burned to the disc.

I think you got the wrong impression about upscaling to HMDI! All it is a way of your DVD player to connect using the HMDI cable...... which will give the best quality you can get with the standard DVDs you already have..... it doesn't make it High Definition.... but it will give you the best quality that is on the DVD itself being able to connect to the newest equipment that has the HMDI cable connection! So your 480i will look even better but it won't get it to 1080i!!!!

Upscaling is the process of converting a standard definition (SD) video signal to a seemingly high-definition (HD) video signal by using a video scaler to match the pixel count of the signal to the physical pixel count on a HDTV or Monitor. Upscaling DVD players are becoming increasingly popular, viewed by many consumers as a cheap way to view HD content. Of course, upscaling does not convert standard definition video to true high definition video at all, but it can dramatically improve the detail and color consistency of the picture.

cause I know that it doesn't produces a picture in true HD only Blu-R and HD do that. What I ment was will it upsacale a regular DVD pre pressed by a manufacture and will it upscale a DVD backup that was backed up in shrink it or some other program like that one, who's rito was about 50% - 60% of the original DVD.

Hope I cleared everything up for ya thanks for your help

I have a Philips 5960 upscaling DVD player connected to a HD LCD TV.
It certainly improves the picture on my backup DVDs. It isn't a
picture equal to HD or Bluray, but it is a lot better than with my
other player which doesn't upscale.
