Hey you guys...

Heres a question.

I have a old motherboard that a freind is giving me, and it has a 1.6ghz proccessor. It should be using pc400 ram. But if i use pc100 ram, even if its like 512mbs or more, does it make the cpu drop in proccessing speed?

what ram is that as pc400 i think is rambus & pc100 is sdram which are 2 different types of ram? pc400 won't fit into pc100 ram slots or vice versa. same goes for pc2100 ram & up.

Well.. the guy whos giving it too me says its compatible with both pc100 and pc400...

And i willhavelike about 3 256 sticks of pc100...

But will the the proccing speed go down from 1.6 to... 1.2 for example if it runs slower memory.. even if in large quantites.

cpu speed won't change. that board must have 2 different types of ram sockets to handle pc100 sdram & pc400 rambus. if the board has 2 different ram slots then most likely can handle only 2 sticks of ram of 1 type at 1 time.

I didn't think AMDs were compatible with Rambus?
Was he talking about DDR RAM PC2100 (266mhz) and PC3200 (400mhz) ?

That's true, I was thinking that a 1.6Ghz AMD might be of the DDR generation. Wasn't it PC133 by that time?

yes but have worked on boards that can use 2 different types of ram as in sdram & ddr or ddr & ddr2 but can only use 1 type at a time.

If you already have some standard SDRAM going about use that, if not, I recommend going with the PC400 slots in stead.
