I see a lot of 3rd party iPod synchronizing programs, but it isn't clear what they do differently than iTunes.

ITunes is irritating to me - it isn't obvious to me what gets synchronized. Not everything gets synchronized from the iPod to iTunes. Typically I waste time turning on and off manual synchronizing - I want it to be manual when I am plugged into my work computer - but I find that if I add lyrics at work, when I synchronize back at home, the lyrics are gone.

And I am filling up my space, pretty soon I won't be able to synchronize at all. But then, how does iTunes know when I have last payed a song, nor what rating I gave that song while I was listening to my iPod?

Some people have both iPods and iPod Shuffles and have to use libraries to play on the smaller shuffle. But what gets updated?

What do you recommend?
