I have a WD 160G external hard drive on my mackbook; it was working find until it just stop to recognize it; I checked on disk utilities and it shows up there but not on my screen and I can do nothing. I try to use "First Aid" on disk utilities and I get an error message
"the underlying task reported failure on exit"
Any help would be greatly welcome.

Sounds like the drive might be failing. try Disk Warrior or Data Rescue 2 on it to ether fix the drive or recover the data.
