Hi all,
You may have heard this many times.

Being new to this I'm looking for DVD-R discs.

I am from Australia, I know people are saying buy the Japanese brands like SONY & VERBATIM that are 'MADE IN JAPAN' which would be the best to use.

However, I looked everywhere for 'MADE IN JAPAN or SINGAPORE' with SONY & VERBATIM ... but they all say 'MADE IN TAIWAN'.
Does anyone out there know where I can buy 'MADE IN JAPAN' of SONY or VERBATIM brand in stores in Australia? I've been everywhere, Harvey Norman, JB HiFi, Bing Lee, etc but no luck finding 'MADE IN JAPAN' DVD-R discs.
Any ideas or help would greatly be appreciated.

A lot of people say to stay away from "made in Taiwan or Hong Kong". And always buy "made in Japan or Singapore".

As a fellow Aussie I can sympathise with you. As Ian (molly) Meldrum would say...."Do yourself a favour" and buy Verbatim or Tdk at worst. TDK's have served me exeptionally well over the years and have given little if any problems. Having said this, I have changed brands and have never regretted the fact.

Some may say this was blind faith, but through observing certain difficulties with certain brands I rekon the extra cost is worth it. Each to their own I guess. To be honest longevity, never really came into question for me. I simply didn't know about manufacturing procedures or the DYES involved.

I have and do purchase my discs through a major chain. The prices most likely compete, but is worth the hunt.

Have you got DVD BLANK IDENTIFIYING SOFTWARE?

If not try these two......

A-ray scanner ...freeware

Or this one....my fav.. Freeware also..

Taiyo Yuden is the only Japanese manufacturer left. Maxell, Sony, Fuji, and TDK have all switched to the same factories manufacturing Verbatim, Imation, HP, Memorex, Philips, and other brands. When a disc says "Made in Japan," it is either an older disc or manufactured by TY.

"People are saying buy ... 'Made in Japan' because of compatibility problems in the past when Japanese drive manufacturers delayed or refused to set firmware for Taiwanese manufactured optical media. Those days are gone, but old information takes a long time to die. The scientists, engineers, chemists, and marketing people for the Japanese brands have decided that the Taiwanese factories produce acceptable product. "A lot of people" act as if they know better. You will have to decide if you believe the chemists and engineers or "a lot of people."

Cheap as in what, compared to TAIYO'S then I might agree with you but TDK's are just marginally cheaper than Verbatim at times.

I admit to buying some of my stock from "office works" a division of woolworths Australia(at least I think so) and these discs are almost always from Taiwan, but by different manufacturers. I have noticed an influx of HP media lately and I stay away from these, as I do Sony media. These two brands have great Market names but havn't as yet proved to be TOTALLY reliable media. Actually when you think about it, is it my/our Country that has become a dumping ground for slack or outdated technology?

Stick with Verbatim or TDK's and NO LOWER!

Imation BTW are CMC MAG here in Oz.

onya, JoeRyan, rbrock

I appreciate your suggestions and information here. Now I understand what to do :)

I definetely will try DVD blank identifying software.

I will be buying Verbatim. I'm looking at getting Verbatim (with advanced AZO) here:
http://www.tandy.com.au/cgi-bin/tandy.st...uct/View/XM1047

JB HiFi are on sale for $19.

Tell me to stay clear of Advanced AZO by Verbatim as I have read threads from people both positive and negative.

Many thanks again for your help :)

@deaftimmy

those verbs you showed in your link. best stuff made. you cant go wrong with them. myself i would go with the +r format than the -r jsut for the fact you can booktype the +r's not saying this to insult you i just dont know if you know what the booktyping means. it changes the format of the dvd from dvd+r to the format that almost every player likes and thats the dvd-rom which is what the dvd movies are.and with the dvd-r's you cant change them.

but in all those verbs are just what you want, and they will say made in taiwan..

hope that helpd some. and what JoeRyan said is perfect cant be said any better than that. if yea ever need a more broke down explanation of disc's he is the man to look up..

oh yea welcome to AD. look around there is alot of info here and alot of smart people willing to help if needed
