I was following the instructions in http://www.cstrike-planet.com/tutorial/1-Linux-Install-CS-16/6 and got up to the part which stated:
If all goes well you should now have the hldsupdatetool.bin in the srcds directory. Now we change the permission of hldsupdatetool.bin so we can execute it and extract the contents from hldsupdatetool.bin
Code:
chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin
./hldsupdatetool.bin
when I do that I get:
hldsupdatetool.bin cannot execute binary file
I have absolutely no idea where to go from here, any ideas?

Do you know how old yellow dog is?
Try upgrading to a more modern linux as shown in the ps3 section of the ubuntu forums.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3079181
ps.. link broken, the tutorial doesn't exist. This one seems to make more sense.. http://www.cstrike-planet.com/tutorial?print=1
especially this part..
Note: after you run ./hldsupdatetool.bin you will get a prompt to agree with the terms and conditions, simply type yes and hit enter.
If all goes well, you should now have two files in the srcds directory, the hldsupdatetool.bin which we downloaded earlier, and a steam file the hldsupdatetool generated, this is the file we will use to install Counter-Strike: Source.
Note: if you receive a 'uncompress: command not found' message it means your server does not have uncompress installed. You have two options to easily work around this, try the following while logged-in as root:
Code:
ln -s /bin/gunzip /bin/uncompress
Then try to run ./hldsupdatetool.bin again. If that does not work, or you do not have root privileges you can download the binary file we have available:
Code:
wget http://www.cstrike-planet.com/dls/steam
Now that you have the steam binary file, Type the following command to begin installing CS Source
Code:
chmod +x steam
./steam -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir .
Note the period after -dir

yellow dog linux = 1999 redhat based distro.. It may be the so called latest but most of it's libraries are out of date.
People seem to agree that it is better to use the ydl install as a method to put a more modern set of libs and kernal in.
ps.. I posted the quote from the link to show which bit of a very long page seems to explain the problem.. If you are such a smart arse then why can't you go looking for your error and find answers instead of posting for help..
Oooo.. console pillok.. i forgot that bit :-(

[hm] quite deserved too , i hate dummies that overuse things like 'teh' and 'nuttin' [just a snotty nosed kid that makes me think]
[jkz] he was trying to be smart.. it took me like 2 hours to find that info for him
[jkz] it's an exact answer to his problem.. which IS related to YDL being too old
[hm] is what drives a lot of good folk from forum(s) .. smart arse idiots that dont know shit ... they had a thought about their error .. decided it hurt to think so posted on forum but then it/she/he doesnt appreciate what they're told
[hm] winds me up , is why i rarely post anymore
I'm not prepared to help a "snotty nosed kid.. I hope you mess your ps3 right up.. then we can all have a really good laugh at your expense..
Your link is STILL broken. not your fault.. it's afterdawn's mistake
