Hello everybody, I've a little dilemmia and was looking for some input. I'm going to be a freshman in college this year and I have heard that Universities in general are pretty strict about any use of P2P programs on their server. So my question is whether or not using something like a Remote Access program which would connect me to my Home PC/network and starting a download via the home pc would be detected in general? At that point I'm not really using their network to download anything--just to connect to my home computer. I'm just looking for safe ways to download files if ever needed. Thanks for your input everyone!!

Hey, I know universities in the UK are rather strict on P2P for the simple reason of bandwith.. I should know im a network admin in a secondary school,

Anyways back to the issue in hand. If you can use Remote Access to connect to your home PC then great, if thats blocked there is a website that you can use to connect to your home pc, i cant remember the name of it but you install the server software on your home pc and then access it via the website using a username and password...

once there if you want to pass the downloaded information back to your home PC you want to setup a FTP server on your home PC so you can FTP the information back to your Uni PC.

So what you will be doing is Connecting to your home PC, Downloading the stuff... then connect to your home PC via FTP and then download it to the machine your on. Most Univeristies will allow FTP connections.

What's the best way to set up an FTP server? and if you remember the name of the site for remote access I'd love to know! What I found is called logmein.com which seems to work but if you've had good experience with another let me know : ) Thanks again for all of the help and information!

Hi, yea its logmein.com iv used it a few times.. just search google for ftp server software should find some rather quickly... basically you will be able to just run with default settings... but if you have a router you might need to make some port forwarding changes..
