I just got a PS3 and I want to seamlessly integrate it into my home theater; my flat panel is does not have HDMI-in nor does my receiver so I use component and optical for all of my input with the exception of a VCR used as a TV tuner. So I'm using my receiver has a switch for all of my other machines, my TV handles up to 1080i and the PS3 outputs in practically every resolution. I first tried to connect the PS3 through the receiver but my receiver does not want to take the PS3's 1080i signal; I then made a direct connection from the PS3 to the flat panel and 1080i worked just fine.

So I did some testing and found something really odd. I set the my PS3 to 1080i when it was plugged directly to the flatpanel and then unhooked the component (while the PS3 was still on) and hooked it up to the back of the receiver and voala I got 1080i from the PS3 from the receiver! I turned off the PS3 and switched it back on and it remained at 1080i. But there is a problem; so the software that comes out on the PS3 varies in resolution so the PS3 will adjust the output to the highest possible resolution the app can handle. When the PS3 does this (anything at 720P and below) my receiver works fine but when comming back to the XMB at 1080i I get a distorted-double-scanline screen. If I turn off the PS3 and switch it back on everything is fine again at 1080i.

I also checked on different games since they run at different resolutions. I checked SuperStarDustHD and when the PS3 goes in to check what resolution it downstreams to 720P and back to 1080i when the game starts and (as I explained before) I get the jacked up screen because the PS3 went down in res then back up again. It's fine when it just down-res the screen, it's coming out and into a higher-res that freaks out my receiver. When the PS3 is connected directly to the flat panel switching resolutions is simple and easy but through the receiver it's being problematic.

The really weird thing is that my upconverting DVDplayer also has a manual resolution button and I can choose which resolution to upconvert a DVD to and when I do switch from 480i to 720P then finally 1080i my receiver and flat panel handle the task perfectly fine. What gives?

I do not want to make a direct connection from the PS3 to the flat panel because I've tried to limit the remotes I have without having to buy a Harmony remote. So I'm down to two remotes and since the receiver does all of my input switching so my flat panel always stays at component; if I were to switch the TV's input I'd have to cycle through all 6 inputs and it takes a long time to do that since changing inputs is not instantaneous.

Sorry for the long description of the problem, I just wanted to be thorough. Anyone have any ideas?
