hello, i am new to the forums and to the mp3/ripping world.

i want to learn to rip my cd collection. i have been reading many articles on google but the more i read about encoders/codecs the more i get confused. not to mention that most things i have found on google are not really "noobie" oriented. the wording and explanations used are still hard to follow sometimes. so i thought i would come here and ask a few questions...

all this time i have been pretty much... a "plug and play" person in terms of mp3 music/players/programs. what i mean by that is... i am used to just get an mp3 file, play it on

my winamp and/or transfer to my mp3 players. i have never experienced with encoding, ripping, etc. so i am a TOTAL NOOOB!

the more i read the more i get concerned... i mean... i don't want to rip my entire cd collection with the wrong encoder nor settings... and then encounter the issue of my mp3s not being compatible with future mp3 players.

so here are my questions/concerns;

1. rip my cd collection so it will play on my current players (nano, zune, sansa e250, sony psp).

2. have it compatible so it will work with mp3 players in the future (i really don't want to loose my mp3s due to them not being compatible with future players).

3. again... compatibility is a big thing because i want to be able to play songs given to me by friends that are not mp3/audio savvy... the ones that just "click and rip" a cd without checking any settings.

4. i want to be able to share my songs with those friends mentioned above and hopefully my songs will be playable in their players.
5. space... i would prefer space instead of audio quality. i mean, my ears are not that sensitive and i am not very pickie, i just want some decent sound.

what do you guy recommend in terms of settings? encoders? readings i should do? i really need some

help here... as i will be DAYS ripping my cd collection. thank you all for reading this.
